So I was to the local zoo today. It is free to enter but the conditions are very poor for most animals. All animals below are native to nicaragua and common.

The landscape around the zoo is fantastic and would allow for a great zoo with very little effort.

Nicaraguan deer species

A 10 ft croc. It has a very small pond that is about the length of the croc. The fun part is that the pond is next to the walk way and the only thing that separates you from the croc is the net you see on the picture. The net is not attached at the bottom and is falling loose all over. You can easily squeeze through it and go into the pond. But they have a small sign (inserted in image) that warns you not to “dingle your feet into the holding pen/pool”. Literally it means “Don’t throw your feet to the lizard” It almost feels like a Darwin award. If you are stupid enough to but your foot in your stupid enough to loose it ;-)

A couple of turtles in the same pond.

More to come.....

Another monkey in another cage. this cage is much worse. Completely void of anything stimulating/or anything at all for that matter.

Ass you can see in this pic. They do have company from other monkeys and a deer.

Yet another monkey in the same cage

Last one from this cage I promise ;-)

A group of raccons in a very boring concrete pen. Atleast these ones have company. One is kept alone in a very small cage next to these. I am guessing that one is a male and they don't want babies.

Here is the guy that really breakes my heart and that I wish someone could rescue. He lives alone in this small cage without any other cappuccino monkeys around, and with no toys or even a branch to sit on. He seems stressed as he moves around.

Another photo of the poor guy where you can see more of how stimulating his cage is.

places like that drive me nuts... I feel bad for the animals.

Love to put the owners in their own cages and see what they think. :hmm3grin2orange:

The owner is last presidents wife, it was a gift from china. (I guess it might be considered state property.)

Every time I go there and see the cappuccino monkey I get tempted to try to bribe the keepers to say it died and take it with me home. They likely make $100 a month or less so it should be possible. It feels like they are waiting for the animals to die so that they can close the zoo.

This could be run inconjuction with the AC Animal Rescue Shelter hey Will?:hmm3grin2orange:

That is very sad. How do they stay afloat with it being free to get in? (or is that a silly question and it's obvious that they aren't?)

There are a lot of fantastic trees. They just have to build the cages around them instead of chooping them down before building one.

It is goverment owned so I doubt I would be able to take it over. And I dount I would have the money because it is located on prime real estate next to the most push area of the city. Take over the animal for a new zoo might be possible but I really need to own some land or something first.

I have considered how I could best help but have not offered yet. Something that is lasting and not just short term.

You know if you could get the land, and start your own zoo, I would seriously consider moving there to help. I am sure several people would.

Who know. It might happen in the future.

I am seriously considering a animal/wildlife rescue center if I am able to raise the money somehow. Perhaps I could provide the land and try to get donations for the buildings, holding pens etc. Would need to raise 2-2,5K for the building. The land would be more than that but I think I will have maybe 10 000 ft2 to spare soon.

That would be really incredible!!!! If you can prove the need, you should have no issue raising the money.

Proving the need shouldn't be a problem(give me a day with my camera) but I have no clue about where to start to get the money.

Ummmm create a wepage for what you wish to do, then send add requests to to the major animal conservation agencies. Make video and submit to youtube, add tags like wildlife rescue, animal rights, zoo. I am really sleepy right now, but I will think about a detailed plan after class tommrow and send it to you in the next few days. You could start a thread here and ask for the thoughts and suggestions of the AC memebers, we have some excellent members that probably have some great ideas!!!

You don't need to do it now. Need to see that I get that land first. Some byrocratic hurdles left.

But it would be great if you could do it down the line.

If it happens I will be sure to share. Right now it is a thought that I am seriously considering, but still just a thought. I will start to make plans etc if I decide to try to go for it,

Thats terrible william

I agree do your own zoo, if you get a site upand running add paypal and I would donate.

I am also sure if you did an adoption scheeme or sponser part of the cage scheme people on here would donate, or how about people help by buying and donating a small plot of land, Ie split it up into half metre squares or smaller and people sponser that bit of land

Just ideas
