How important is an airstone for your tank? I understand what it does, but wonder if it is always necessary. At the moment I have a ten gallon planted blackwater-ish tank. Thank you!

I don't use any air stones and my tanks are fine.

If you have a filter that hangs on the back of your tank, that most likely provides more than surface agitation. So you really don't need to use an air stone, I don't use them in my tanks either.

I use a hang over the top filter that does agitate the surface. Good to know this is sufficient. Thank you.

I asked the same thing not too long ago. Like the others said, filters that hang over the edge agitate the water more than enough, particularly if you have a biowheel style filter.
I removed the airstones from all my tanks. Now the only time I use them is when I'm treating with meds.

Airstones simply add more circulation/oxygenation to your tank, that's all.
