I saw some small butterfly Hillstream Loaches at the petstore today for 8.00 ea. was wondering how they would get along in a 29 gallon tank and are the easy to care for. They are only about 1.5 inches long and was thinking about getting one but I wanted to get advise first.

I would set up a species only tank for these, as they need fast cool water and well oxygenated.

I had 2 of them over the years. They did ok till I put them in my planted tank, they were dead in a month.I wouldnt think they would need a species only tank but a well aerated very clean tank would be in order.

Well when I ment species only tank, I ment with other fish that need fast flowing water. White clouds are a good tank mate.

These loaches require well oxygenated, very clean water to survive, They need lower temperatures, and plenty of algae as well. They come from fast flowing mountain streams in Asia, and in order to thrive, their tank should mimic these conditions. I have a tank specially set up for them and they are very enjoyable to watch. They do well with fish requiring similar conditions like White Cloud minnows.

Would they be O.K. in a ten gallon tank? I have some bubble wands 2-3 of them that are about 6 inches long that I could put into the tank and make plenty of bubbles. For a filter I have an AC 50 that I could put into the tank that is already seeded with bacteria from my 55 gallon also I still have a bag of Pool Filter Sand somewhere that I could use as substrate. I have tons of java moss would this be a good addition for the tank? If this is not adequate then I won't be disappointed in not getting one, they just looked almost flouder like and thought it would be a nice addition to my tank setups.
