Variable as it depends on the type of coral.

Any particular type of coral your inquiring about?

Signs that it is not doing well can include tissue recession, bleaching, non-expansion of polyps, disintegration, droopiness, etc. But again depends on the coral.

I have mainly mushrooms, zoanthids, Xenia sp., etc. As long as they are open, have good colors, keep growing, they are doing well. My SPS are the same way, open and colorful is good.

It usually has to be really bad if they lose color, tissue, etc.

Its a leather finger coral I picked up at the LFS. Couldnt identify it before as there were no identifiable details when I bought it.. Ive posted a picture of the afforementioned coral here..

By common sense and looks alone it looks to be doing well as in the LFs it wasnt that open and fingers werent that extended at all so it looks to be enjoying itself.
