I was at the pet store earlier on, and have seen a reasonably priced 15 gallon tank (UK gallon - 70 litres, measuring 24inch x 15inch x 12inch)
How many fish would I be able to put in a tank of this size? Would I also be able to use a divider so that my troublesome betta could have half to himself? Would half of a tank this size be suitable for him?
I'm thinking yes, but it's best I ask you more knowledgeable folks first thumbs2:

Well it depends on what type of fish you like. If you really like bettas, you could put two nice males, with a divider of course.

Bettas can often be put into community tanks, so if you choose carefully, you won't need a divider. What kind of fish were you thinking of keeping? The stocking capacity of a tank depends on the type of fish as well as the max size.

I don't really know to be honest. I already have neon tetras, glow light tetras, minnows, red wag tail platys, guppys, a betta and a couple of leopard catfish (can't remember their Latin name - these ones grow about 3inch long).
So, I'm thinking something different, but small. Maybe some barbs, red tailed sharks - stuff like that.
But these would just be housed in half of the 15 gallon tank as I'd like my betta in the other half, as my betta appears to have a bad attitude and seems to hate all other fish he gets near.

You are WAY overstocked (imo). Red tailed sharks need at least 25 gallons per shark, because they are extremely territorial. There is no way all of those fish will fit in 7.5 gallons.

The fish I have described are fish I already have in a larger tank. I was merely giving a description as I would like suggestions on other kinds of fish to put in the 15 gallon tank I am thinking of buying, but would specifically like to know how many fish to put in to 7.5 gallons, as I would like the other 7.5 gallons to be used for my betta.
The barbs and red tailed sharks are suggestions for the new tank.

as far as how many fish can be in 7.5 gallons really depends on how big they are, how much bioload they have, foot print of the tank

you dont have to devide half the tank for the betta, 7.5g is good, but having its own 5 gallon is just as good and plus the fish on the other side will have more room.
as for the other side, redtail sharks will grow big and aggressive.
a few small barbs will do fine.most tetras, even slightly bigger fish such as dwarf gouramies will live happily in 10g.
