So, with no need to make a sump now, and a extra 10 gallon tank and whisper 30 laying around, I've decided to set up a new tank. No cycling needed because I will just take from the other filters lol.

What I'm wondering is:

How many shrimp can you house in a 10 gallon tank?
What type of substrate should I do? I'm guessing black so it would be easy to find the shrimp
What do shrimp like? (like plants and decor)

Could probably fit over a 100 shrimp in a 10g. Shrimp aren't picky about substrate or I dont think. Shrimp love java moss since they feed on everything in it. They also appreciate plenty of hiding places where they can go to molt. Things like clay pots work well.

Agreed, more like 400 shrimp in a 10gal, java moss or any mosses are fine, I say black sand is the best!

Substrate really doesnt matter to them its your personal preference, Im using some Torpedo Beach sand and it works great for them. They love plants....moss especially, they also like the root systems that come from floating plants like Red Root Floater and Water Lettuce. Be sure you put a sponge on your filter intake so they wont get sucked up it. I agree you can easily keep several hundred shrimp in there. Ive got 25ish in my 5G and rarely see more than 6-8 of them due to their tiny size. Crab cuisine or Shrimp cusine are great foods for them as are little pieces of algae wafers.

That would depend on the species of shrimp, What species did you have in mind?

For cherry shrimp (or other shrimp that size) several hundred in a ten gal is more than fine.

They love mosses and anything that has fine leaves that will pick up particles from the water, yum yum. Because they feed on bio film, taking some substrate from another tank for the top layer is excellent for them

Pretty much anything works for the shrimp tank. Add a black substrate and background, and it'll show off their deep red color nicely, any plant works. If you want it just for breeding the red cherry shrimp, toss some java moss into a bare tank and some shrimp in there, every few days drop in a bit of algae wafer. Just avoid any foods or fertilizers with copper, affects their ability to reproduce.

Remember to put a small sponge like aquaclear sponge over the filter intake. Else your shrimp will go for a ride in the filter's impeller and end up mush.

Nice! Probably have to end up getting like 20 first and let them reproduce for a while, then start selling. I'll put some java moss and a moss ball in there. And maybe a couple cave decor things. Can't wait to get it up
