i have a 20 gallon tank thats up and running and cycled, and i have a few fish that have outgrown the tank that im going to give to a friend that has a larger tank so i'll have some extra room. Right now, i have three tiger barbs, i know thats not a lot but due to some problems with my decorations (several got wedged in my skull and beat themselves up so bad they later died). so i removed that. anyway. i will have them and a blue dwarf gourami. I was thinking of getting maybe 4 more barbs, and maybe some cory's as bottom feeders. This wouldn't over stock the tank would it? and how many cory's could i afford if i can afford any at all?

I would look into finding a more friendlier group of barbs,(like cherry barbs) tigers tend to beat up fish, and would tare apart your gourami. But if you feel like taking a chance (sometimes works) then you could add 3-4 more and add a cory school.

i've read a lot about barbs nipping other fish, buy my gourami likes to chase them around the tank, they've never bothered him since the first day i put him in. by school, how many are we talking about?

Corys like to be in a school of 6 or more, so 6 would probably work in your tank.

I agree with RS. That Tiger Barbs are great fish at being aggressive.
IMO I would look for fish that are a lot more kinder. Barbs like Pentazon Barbs would be a good choice.

As for the Corys a school of 5-6 would be more than fine.

I want to keep the bio-load as low as possible as i am heading off to school in the fall and my mom will have to care for the tank while im away. So would 1 blue dwarf gourami, 6 tiger barbs, 5 corys work?

Tiger loaches get real big, and real territorial, which in turn is why your betta got his fins nipped!
