what are interested in and what are your water parameters? your water will dictate what you can put in.

GREAT reply. This is exactly what we need to do to guide people. Determine goals first, then go for it.

So, fatboywez, are you looking for a community tank with different kinds of fish or a tank of the same species? Are you willing to later upgrade to a larger tank if you buy fish that will outgrow your current size?

Imo, the water parameters aren't THAT crucial, unless the difference between the ideal for the species and your parameters differ by a lot (Ie trying to keep discus in 8.2 pH tap water) Most likely, the fish at your LFS are already adapted to whatever local water you have, as I have yet to see a LFS that actually provides the ideal water parameters for each type of fish, since they usually have those giant wet/dry systems that circulate water in between all tanks.

Were you thinking of having many small fish or a few larger ones? How much time/money are you willing to spend?

Well ok, certain fish like Rummynose Tetras are picky, but the vast majority of freshwater fish can adapt to a wide variety of water parameters given proper time to acclimate. And it may also be dependent on the particular stock as well. My LFS has true rummynoses, and their water has a pH of 7.2 and is fairly hard. The rummynoses all seemed to be doing fine, with a very bright nose.

i would like a nice coummunity of fish all different species and sizes but nothing that will grow to big so it will be unhappy. I dont want to have to upgrade the tank at a later date if i can help it. We are both intrested in fighters but understand that "nippy" fish may not mix well. We like "pretty" fish and i would like to see the fish mybe breed in the tank??

thanks wez and caz

You can't go wrong with a livebearer community tank then. Guppies, platies are all very colorful and will breed like rabbits.

You will often buy fancy guppies that are already pregnant since the females can store sperm for so long. Thank god my wife can't do that.
