currently in a 20 gallon tank i have:
1 BN
3 platies
4 swordtails +3 fry (they are too big to be eaten by the other fish + frogs)
5 ADF's
also i have about 7 fry. 2 platies and 5 swordtail babies.
the reason i want to keep all of them is that a) the platies will most likely survive even if they are put back in the tank b/c they are pretty much see-though (sp?) and can only be eaten by the frogs now.
i want to keep the swordtails too because the male is a deep orange and black and the female is pineapple. and the babies are very different looking and i want to see what they would look like grown up! but they would most likely be eaten if put back in the tank b/c they are bright.
currently all the babies are in one of those breeder cages.
i also have two filters going (1 hob+1 sponge) also i do a 25% water change a week. so whats your thoughts?

Swordtails get pretty large so you may want to consider a different tank if you plan to keep the rest of your fry.

I wouldn't call your tank overstocked yet, but it certainly is at it's maximum. That stocking level shouldn't cause you any problems at all providing you keep up with your water changes. I'd love to see a picture of that tank.

You are not overstocked yet! The live bearers will take care of that for you though! lol
Lots of floating plants and you will not really need that breeder trap.
I use Hornswort with no special lighting and my fish love it.

Wait are we taking the fry into account as well? 1 BN, 5 platies, 7-9(I'm a little confused here) swordtails, 5 ADF and 5 rasboras seems a little much to me.

Just me though.

I personally think you are close. I would personally step up the water changes to 50% since you are pretty much stocked to the limit at the moment. Of course the plants will help a lot.

what kind of problems would i be looking for in an overstocked tank?

IMO and IME excessive amounts of toxic waste shown, when you test your water.

Like suggested I would up the water changes.

What are the nitrate readings before you do your water change, and how much does it increase per week?

i think you will be overstocked. i believe the bristlenose grows to 5 inches [not sure], and the swords will be 5 inches, plus both they and platys are adding fish themselves to your community. if you are able to add a 20 to 30 gallon tank you could spread out your group and greatly reduce your bioload strain.:fish:
