is it possbile to put a gold balloon ram and german blue ram together in the same tank. like say a 20 or 40 gallon tank?

They should be fine. They are the same species. If they are both male you may get a bit of squabbling.

the 40 gal would definately be better for the 2 rams to minimize disputes.
this size tank allows additional fish to be added [tetras for example] whose presence would calm the rams.

yep, like the other posters said. It should be fine. Try to make some identifiable territories for the two of them in case they are males. If they each have an area to claim it will make aggression less of an issue.
