A few pictures of my little sick baby. As some of you know the tovi parakeet that follows us every when we go out kayaking etc got a broken bone a few days ago. It is healing nicely and he is not able to use the leg rather well again. The splinting will stay on for another 2-3 weeks.

I do which there where small animals vets here but I guess it good to learn to become ones own field vet.

The tape you see is just to protect the inner splinting that is done using another technique.

No. None of the instructions I could find said anything about that. The inner layer is set not to restrict blod flow and is not rapped around the leg like the outer protective layer. The outer layer is not to set to hard. The tape can breed and allows him to use his toes.

Good job there, Dr William. Makes you wonder how they heal so quickly but with good doctoring they do. He appears to be happy enough with it.

Cool. I have never bandaged a broken leg on a bird, but we usually add some cotton roll just to prevent any pressure, or rubbing to the skin, and to help stabalize the splint, keep it from moving when it gets bumped.

Thanks for the tip. I think cotton might be hard to use on a bird as small as this without risking that the break can move. Atleast when you, like me, are not experinced doing it. But is sounds like a good idea for the bigger birds. Hopefully they will never break their bones but if they do I will keep it in mind

He seems very happy again and is gaining mobility fast so I am happy.

Well done Will!

He certainly looks bright and happy with it on, you must have done a good job setting it.

Nice job William!

A roll of guaze may help if you have to reset that cast but it looks like its doing its job just fine!thumbs2:

So far it has been staying in place nicely. But thanks for the advice.
Perhaps I need to have to get together an animal first aid kit from the pharmacy so that I have things like guaze. Might not be a bad idea if I hurt myself more than usuall either.

I support this idea.

Mostly because "animal first aid kit" sounds funny.

Except, make one yourself, you'll better know what you need to be prepared for. You should also plan for animals you don't yet have.:hmm3grin2orange:

for. You should also plan for animals you don't yet have.:hmm3grin2orange:

I meant to make one myself. There are no ready made package like that here:scry:

And of course i need to prepare for new animals. there is a cappuccino monkey living under horrible conditions in the local zoo i would like to get my hands on.:hmm3grin2orange:

Will take pictures next time I am in town.

The break should heal quickly, the bird is young and healthy. Only bad thing is, he/she will be more spoiled than ever from the extra attention.

Tell me about it. The first day he didn't spend 5 min that he wasn't leaning towards on of our arms. However I am not sure he can get more spoiled. He lives on our desk or in trees during the day. He can go between as he pleases.

Oh wait. Yes he could be more spoiled. He is not allowed on the dinner table.
