Do I have to buy the dry rock from the store of can any rock be used to become live rock?? I didn't know if it had to be a special type

By special, he means porus and bumpy, just look for dry rock that resembles LR and it'll work. Just not flat, smooth, round, etc.

So I can go over to my lake and look for any type of rock as long as it has a lot of holes and rough looking....

To start with you need actual live rock. To supplement it you can use dry rock. Feller Stone makes what they call 'antique coral' which is a great option. I would not use any other types of rock, only what is meant to reef aquariums.

And don't use lava rock, I forget exactly what it does, but I think I remember reading somewhere it can screw up your pH or something.

yup, lava rock is acidic and therefore decreases your pH
