Received one of these and an undergravel with a Powerhead 802 from someone that bought a house with a built-in. They have no interest in aquariums, soooooo...! :)
Not sure how reliable the Magnum is. In all the searches I did opinions seem to be about 50/50. I won't be going with the under gravel at all.
I have a 65 gal. I'll be setting up, Botia striata (zebra loaches) and community/planted. I had planned on going with HOB's but now???
How reliable is it? Instead of a permanent installation I can also set it up on a wheeled stand (like a portable IV) and use it for water changes, vacuuming, cycling a new tank, quick filtration for a problem tank etc., etc. We would always be able to see immediately if there is a problem with it not having it under a stand somewhere.
Are they problem prone??

Magnums arnt a bad filter if you buy the quick disconnect kits, Ive ran a few Mags over the years but outside of using them with just Micron cartridges for fine pore mechanical filtration I havent really used them. They arnt hard to setup and operate, and if you keep a check on the seals they typically dont leak and are long lived filters. I would however run it in addition to another filter setup primarily as a bio-filter. I would go for another small canister or an AquaClear power filter stuffed full of biological media.

:yeahthat: Magnums are mainly water polishers.
