Well, the two black neons and the serpae tetras came through the four weeks quarantine without incident. I moved the black neons over to the main tank last night (will transfer the serpaes in a week or so to just to make sure everyone is settled first) and they seem to be doing great, have coloured up nicely and all nine are now schooling together - tighter than the seven did before which is great.

I hadn't realised how big the original lot had grown until the other two were in there with them. Those two look so tiny in with the others which are more than twice their size. It's cute. I'll try and post some pics later when the tank light comes on (if I can figure out how to post them).

I've also set up another small quarantine tank to speed up the stocking process on the 42gal a little (at four weeks quarantine each lot of fish it was going to take about 5 months to fully stock, this way I can stagger the quarantine periods and add fish every two weeks - and it was a good excuse to get another tank). It's only a 5 gallon but I had a heater and filter suitable for that size tank laying around. It's got another 4 serpaes in there now.

Anyway, to the question. When the stocking on the big tank is complete I wanted to keep one of the smaller tanks as a quarantine/hospital tank and transform the other into a betta tank (will probably be getitng a plakat actually - love the look of those guys). The largest fish that might need to occupy the hospital tank would be the opaline gourami. So the question is which tank should I use for the betta - the 5 or the 10? It'll be awhile before I can set it up as a betta tank but I'd like to start planning and getting together stuff like the light etc.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading.

I would put the beta in a ten gal. tank! You can add some small tetras with it.The serpaes should be in the big tank because a 5 gal. is just too small for them! They need more room. The 5gal. is good for a planted shrimp tank!
