I would have to say never!
They grow at a rate of 1"/month.Thats real fast.
Having too little room to grow will stunt them, stress them, shorten their life span and possibly kill them in the end.
It s suggested a 55 is a good size but I highly recommend a 75!

Yup! Craigs list is great! You really have to keep an eye on though because the good deals go fast.
There are exceptional deals that come up on 75s!
Oscars ar dirty fish and need some powerful filtration.A 75 would be best with a canister and and hang on the back like an aqua clear 110 or a topfin. They both tons of media!
Sorry if I sounded harsh at all but you have to see how fast they get real big to understand!
You will love it!lol

You will love Oscars, but first get a 75 or larger for best results. Like Northernguy said, get a canister filter AND a hang on back, maybe an Aquaclear. That will help you a lot to get started with just one oscar. Don't forget to cycle your tank. Welcome to the forum!

Great advice everyone. Oscars NEVER in less than a 55. Remember that this fish should get beyond 12" in length. Hardly fair to have it in a tank that does not allow it to turn comfortably.

There's 2 155g bowfronts with stands on craigslist right now for 200$ each that I'm champing at the bit for. I really, really don't need another 2 tanks, but still...
I tried to buy a 90g tank last night for 50$ but I emailed the guy too late and it went to someone else.

Anyway, craig's list is great. Always keep an eye out.

They and can easily become your favorite fish!
I hope you do find the right tank before you find the right fish.Just because they are easy to take care of but if your tank is too small they will be subject to hole in the head as well other dreadful viruses. They do need room and filtration!
They will acknowledge you everytime you walk into the room. They are actually happy to see you!
Oscars Rock! lolthumbs2:
