I had previously thought spirulina food was for saltwater fish, but a few places have listed it as a food for community fish.

Does regular community fish food have enough spirulina in it, or does their diet need to be supplemented with the flake?

I give mine a bit daily. They all eat it. In the wild fish eat a lot of plant matter and it's always good to supplement their diets.

Spirulina is a good addition to the diets of many community fish. Spirulina is good for color, contains essential proteins and is generally good for their health. Many fish flakes don't contain spirulina at all so you should supplement with spirulina flakes.

ditto what they said ^^^^

Spirulina wasn't the favorite of the foods according to my fish, but they did eat it when they noticed I wasn't putting anything else in there.

Isnt spirulina also added to algea wafers?

If anyone could recommend some brands I'd be much obliged. I think that quality between products is so varied and I don't want to waste my money (and risk my fish's well being) by feeding an inferior product.

i use nutrafin. Spirulina is basically algae. Most herbivores like mollys and platys like spirulina. I use lots of different flakes on my fish. I can get bulk vitamin foods, bulk color enhancer flakes, etc.

I also use Nutrafin spirulina flakes. Hikari also makes spirulina products and often includes spirulina in it's other diets, so it's worth looking into.

The absolute favorite of any type of dried foods with my fish always seems to be the omega one variety so that is what I stick with. My clown loaches were heard clicking very loudly thru my 65 gallon tank about 3 feet away after I dropped some Omega One veggie tabs in this evening. Even my modestus puffer will taste some omega one flake when I put it in for his tankmates.

I supplement my regular tropical fish food with spirulina flakes for my Platys. I read that they actually need more vegetable matter in their diet than my other fish. They also like to eat the various algae that grows on my tank walls and ornaments and fake plants. I will be trying out some fresh veggies a little later. My Zebra Danios will try it but don't really like it.

I also use nutrafin. I give it to them a couple times per week.
