Hi all,

Will post pics of the new and first of three investments of the marine kind, a 28G integrated nano tank with stand!!!!

Its mint!!!!

Anyways. Im having a confusing moment concerning water. Reading about various methods about TDS DI and RO water and salinity. I get the impression that its really only the chloramine and chlorine thats harmful to the fish... So...

Why cant I add Dechlorinator and/or some other water treatments to make the water the best quality it can be, then let the filter do the work. Our water quality is really good and soft, as im in the west country so its still pretty natural in its treatment. Im not skimping, its just that the LFS are banging on about their own water, and then their own RO units, cant really find any defo info on RO units, also, to make matters worse, the RO units that ive found that are available and decent enough in the UK are listed under House and home products so im not sure if these are the right ones!!!!!!

A bit confused on this one so any help would be really really appreciated.

In marine tanks it is not just Chlorine and Chloramine. The TDS = Total Dissolved Solids. There are many things in that TDS that can harm your tank, one of which is Copper. The higher the TDS, the lower the quality and the higher your chance of algae.

Now, if you are like me and your TDS is <30 right out of the tap, you are likely fine with just using it with a dechlorinator.

Must be nice. Mine are 200 out of the tap. I have a friend who lives by Dodger Stadium and his TDS readings are 800 out of the tap!

Even with tap water that is low in TDS, there is no real way (other than the annual water report) of knowing what that TDS is comprised of.

85ppm of one compound may be harmless, while 3ppm of another may be harmful or create ripe conditions for nuisance algae growth.

If you're that concerned, you could invest in your own RO/DI filter.
