I was writing to find out what the white spots on one of our fish were, but once it was netted it out and quarantined, they have disappeared (instantly). The fish is a sunset platy. Today is the first day that the case was noticed. The spots were only on the rear fin and anal fins, but there again completely gone.

have you ever had ich? very common in the fishkeepers world and 90% of white spots on your fish...

This will be the first case of ich if that's what it is/was. Do the spots typically fall off?

Typically, the ich falls off, reproduces and so it gets worse, not better.

Something killed off the ich and "cured" the fish, some possibilities are:

Did you add salt to the Q tank? If so, thats what killed the ich and you should continue to treat the fish for a week (with salt) otherwise, the ich will probably come back.

Heat above 86 f?

Also, if the Q tank is bare, that can have an adverse effect on ich in some cases

Ich looks like pen dot size white dots, if they are larger it was probably something else.

We noticed the spots for the first time today. No treatment whatsoever.
The spots fell off while I was trying to catch the fish with a net.
They were very small spots on the tail and anal fin. But went away while it was swimming away from net.

If it was ich, the main tank is probably infected since like i say, falling off is how they reproduce. Keep an eye out

It is a bit off that the fish just lost all the ich at once, feed any garlic? anything out of the ordinary?

We started the tank mid-April. Around the end of May we noticed green algae growing on the gravel so we added two Otocinclus. Since then both ghost shrimp have died and now this.

Any particular reason 2 of the female platys like parking on the gravel? One looks pregnant.

Introducing new fish to your ecosystem always has chance for new diseases or whatever... this is why alot of people keep quarantine tanks... and whatever you do, never ever introduce LFS water into your tank.

Are there a lot of particles in your water? If it's not ich, which could be a good possibility from what I've heard so far, it's probably just the particles floating around in the water, and as the platy swims through them, they catch on like dog hair does on a cotton shirt. Most of the time, when the fish is frightened or has other reason to have a burst of speed, the particles fall off. I've had this on my oscar before, and I put a piece of krill in the water, and when he lunged to get it before the rest of the fish, the spots fell off. No ich, just particles. Still, be cautious and watch the rest of your fish, because it still might be ich.
