View Full Version : 2 Baby Oscars Fighting??

I have 2 baby oscars about 3 inches who seem to get along one minute, then the next minute one will swim right into the other one slamming into it for no reason at all. They are in a 75 gallon tank by themselves. One is a lutino, and the other is a black tiger, (and it's not just one picking on the other, they both do it to each other).
Will I have to seperate these two eventually? Or could it stop, and they may get along? At times they seem like the best of friends.
75 gallon:
4 peacock cichlids
1 venustas
1 electric yellow lab
1 red rubin
1 rostratus
1 electric blue
2 red zebra
2 albino socolofi
1 red shoulder peacock
75 gallon:
1 lutino oscar
1 black tiger oscar
10 gallon:
1 male betta
4 cory cats

If I am not mistaken when there juveniles they are more prone to fighting.

They are just trying to work out which one is going to be the boss - testing each others strength... it will most likely stop once that has been established for a while.

Might just be a territorial thing. If need be, put in a divider for a couple of weeks, then take it out, let them interact with each other, and then put the divider back in. That should help quite a bit. If you do notice them being territorial, move the decorations in the tank around. This will break up any established territories and help them get along a little better.

Thank you for your replies. I am hoping that is the case. Even though I have MTS, I was hoping to keep these 2 together. If they are both males or females will the fighting continue?

Truthfully, the fighting will stop once a dominance is made over one or the other. It's a power thing, if not a territory thing.

I agree with the 'dominance' idea. Rearrange their tank and see if that helps out any. They might be so flustered by their new surroundings that they'll stop fighting for awhile.

Sometimes it is just a better idea to let them fight it out and get it over and done with...they will do so eventually anyway as most cichlids do. You can keep changing the tank around but in the long run it will just prolong the dominance issue. Just keep an eye out that it doesn't go 'too' far and be ready to step in if it does.

I already have another 75 gallon ready just in case it gets bad, I just didn't want to set it up yet. This is the first time I ever kept Oscars. Thanks everyone, I appreciate it.
