Out of most of the fish I have ever had.
This one has got to have been the most interesting.
I am hoping to be able to get another eel soon.
But it will be a Tanganyika one not a Malawi one like this.

This guy had to be fed blood worm. To stop my malawi getting bloat from eating them too.
I was advised on making him a special feeding station.
This was a plastic coke bottle with the top removed and a 2cm square hole cut in the side.
That ment only he could get in and out and not miss out on his dinner.

Very cool. I remember seeing some crabs not too long ago on a wholesale list, also from Tanganyika.
Great pics as always.

Nice, I've never even seen shiranus listed f/s. I recently lost my pair of plagiostoma's (avatar is pic of the female) and would like to find another. I had them for several years before a bacterial bloom lowered the O2 too much. Both were 9.5" long, and weren't likely to ever grow more than another .5". They ate frozen foods, not a problem for me because I didn't house them with mbuna. They didn't need to be fed daily either, though if they were it conditioned them for spawning during the right season. The bred repeatedly, but the male ate the eggs before they ever had a chance to hatch.

It's no hassle at all. It actually makes it great to watch him eat & there is no risk to the other fish in the tank & he doesn't miss out either.:ssmile:
toddnbecka ~ sorry you lost yours.:scry:

I was very lucky to get this guy as they are rare in the hobby:ssmile:

One thing you have to watch/consider is conspecific compatability. Some species are quite social, (Tanganykian elipsifer for example) while others won't get along with their own species. I'm not sure about keeping different species together, apparently not many folks have tried it long-term.

I was thinking of a tank on there own this time not in with the haps and tangs. I know my malawi left this eel alone but I am not so sure about the haps & tangs in the group I have now. There are LOADS of hiding places like rocks and root systems but just to be safe maybe a tank on there own would be better.:ssmile:

I put his food in there.:ssmile: Eels tend to be more nosey and so will inspect anything new in the tank and try to get in. Not sure on a bichir though. :ssmile:

Find a fish store that will take it and give you store credit. You may even get an eel for free that way.:ssmile:

I don't think my LFS take them for store credit, I know once doesn't, don't know about the other.

You can only try or if you can travel take it to one further away ?
You could also put it up on aqua bid. :ssmile:

Trying to see if the store 20 minutes from me takes it. I'm just afraid to ship thing, i'd feel bad if I shipped it and it got stressed and died.

You can always say " pick up only " :ssmile:
You could also try the local paper and sell it throught the pets section :ssmile:

Have a look to see what other people are asking for them at around the same size before you decide on a price. Look at the lowest pe=rice and the hightest price and ask for something inbetween.
I am not sure you can put " pick up only " but it is worth looking into and you could always state that maybe ?

They do have a pick up only. Going to ask 25 for him. Love him but I don't want him to get beat up by my BP, JD or pleco and if I do eventually get a eel

Ok I have to tell you these pointers.
First off this is an eel that is not often found in the hobby.
Aethiomastacembelus shiranus
Second the fish you are thinking of putting him in with are not a very good idea as they are better housed with malawi cichlids.
You will also need a Ph of around 8 for him to thrive.
They get to around 12" long and are better housed in a 6 foot tank minimum. :ssmile:
