It never ceases to amaze me the way swords overrun a tank,This is a top picture of my tank with half the water drained. Its a mix of rubins and amazons.14900

Seriously,,,,.Once a month water change and maybe twice a year gravel vac.The plants eat the nasty stuff, the fish are thriving but yeah,it is kind of dirty(blush)

Let's also remember thought that water parameters need to be in check to have this kind of system work. Before everyone goes and switches out to monthly water changes be sure to monitor water parameters closely so as to avoid harming the fish. It works well for smaug's tank but may not work for everyone's tank. Proceed with caution.

Nice disclaimer gm,,,,,you a lawyer in real life:14: :hmm3grin2orange:
Anyway, less water change and infrequent gravel vacuuming is a way of life with a thickly planted tank.As Gm states an eye must be kept on your numbers but to be honest if your plants are healthy you can mostly rest assured that your water will be fine as well. The only touchy thing that has happened keeping my tank this way is a lowering of the ph [naturally at this point].If you decide to try and keep a tank this way you must NOT change anything quickly such as remove a bunch of plants [trimming is fine].Otherwise the toxins that would otherwise be used by the plants will be unchecked.
