Can I put my female betta in with my hi fin platies? I've read about some nipping with platies. Just curious, right now I have her in my 30gal with my barbs, but she is in a little net to keep her seperate from them. Will I have to worry the same with the platies? I'd like to give her more swimming room!

Some people keep betta's with a multitude of fish species with no problems whatsoever while others have problems from the start...it really depends on the fishs' personalities. I guess there is no definitive answer, sometimes you just have to wait and see and be prepared to move her if necessary. I can be too cautious and prefer to keep betta's in their own tanks.

Many may disagree with me, but if the tank you are wanting to put the betta in, is the 5gal. with 4 platies in it (as in your sign.), I think that is already at it's limit. Giving her more room is a good idea though, keeping fish in those nets for too long is stressful for them.

I have four female Betta in a 10g with 1 male Swordtail and 2 Cory Cats. The girls were really nippy with each other so I added more broken terracotta pots for hiding spots and they settled down quit a bit. I then added the sword and cats and the girls calmed even more. They only nip at each other once in a while now and the tail of the sword has been a target but hasn't been nipped off.

My theory with the fem Betta is that the more she sees another fem, the more aggressive she becomes towards that fem. By adding hiding places and other fishes to distract attention, her rage gauge gets reset more often so she's not so likely to go on a homicidal spree, heh.

Thats a nice looking beta!
I never had luck with them.I started with two and they killed everything in the tank.It was a ten gallon.I guess mine were part wolf the way those two hunted.I sure am glad other people have had better luck with them.

Thanks! She's still relatively new to the 'crew' ...so we shall see I guess! But so far so good! lol I'd love to mate her with my crowntail, but I have a feeling it may be difficult...and then there are all the babies if successful...eep! :ssuprised:
