I think it is around 1-2 yrs before they reach sexual maturity (around 10cm the males will start to develop their horns). Please note that I have no experience with plecos, so this is just what I have read.

Given a good diet, clean water, etc. they will mature in about 8-9 months, or about 2.5-3". The first spawns will be relatively small, a fully grown female will produce 100 eggs each time. Once they start they will keep going for some time before taking a break.

On a related note, when do they start sprouting their whiskers? Mine is probably not quite 2 inches long and there's nary a whisker to be seen yet.

The males have many whiskers and the females barely have any.
She decides on a mate by the size of their bristles!:hmm3grin2orange:

Great. So now I have to go out and buy a male. Any way to tell male from female when they're an inch and a half long?

No way to sex them at that size, it's best to buy several and grow them out. The female/s will decide which male they like, and you can swap off the rest.
