View Full Version : Will it Hold, Part 2

ok, i took some shots of the table i am now planning on putting my tank on. i think it will be fine but i would like to get people's opinions. not only if it can hold my 29 gallon tank, but also if it could potentially hold a larger tank. i mean, the table is 48" long, and it is already perfectly level in my room where i want it set up.
so, will this table hold a 29 gallon? more?
all the wood is 1 1/4" thick and there is that support bar running between the legs. i have a feeling it could hold a lot.

It should be fine. The only thing I would be concerned about is if it can sway from side to side. I would stand on it and and shift your weight from foot to foot and see if it sways. If it doesn't you'll be good.

well, if i push on the end, it moves side to side lengthwise....but if i push it broadside it does not move at all.
i stood on it and shifted around and it moves just a little, lengthwise end-to-end. just a little. i weigh 210, not as much as the tank will weigh, but still...

If it moves a bit tighten up the screws and maybe add in a few more...that should do the trick. If your just using it for a 29G tank it will definatly be fine :22:

hey, thank you both! when i looked under the table the screws were very loose. so i tightened them up and now the table does not sway. i think it is good to go. i will just have to check the screws every once in a while

Yeah that table will do fine. Its solid wood so it should hold up.

That will definitely hold, that is solid! None of that particle board stuff. If it still sways a bit, could add a metal brace or two, or add a few bolts at that point. I think if you did that you could probably even go with a larger tank on that stand.

You could easily park a 90 on that table!
Now thats a Nice stand!

if you're worried about the screws coming loose, take them out and fill the holes with wood glue and reinsert the screws and wipe away the overflow. It will act lile loctite for wood. They'll stay put.

yeah, i would totally do that if i had some wood glue, and i know i should probably go out and get some, but i am too lazy right now. i think what i will do is in a month or so i will do a 50% water change, and during that i will lock them in with wood glue. i will keep an eye on them until then
thanks everybody....i am filling it

Now that's thick and solid but something to think about - sag in the middle.
My Dad has a large tank on a table (not as sturdy as that table though) and jammed a 2X4 cut to exact length in the middle to prevent sag.
Wood that thick probably won't sag much if at all, but just keep an eye out for it, especially when you use it with a larger tank.

ok, here it is...with 40 lbs of eco-complete and nothing else. the hood light that i bought does not work. i will take it back tomorrow. thanks for all the help and i will be sure to put up photos when i do something with it. now i just have to figure out what to do. im going to throw in 5 or 6 zebra danios tomorrow from my other tank.

I just had my 29g on a really cheap looking table temporary for a few weeks and it held fine.
What i was worried about was if swaying from side to side like stated earlier.
Why don't you or someone in your house just stand on the table and see how sturdy it feels.
8lbs x 30g = 240lbs. heavier then a normal person but it would be a good estimate of how sturdy the table is from side to side.

here is a photo with 5 zebra danios swimming around plus a piece of driftwood. then i decided to throw a backing on it to give me an idea of what it can eventually look like. im using the eco complete and a 65w compact fluorescent. i will throw a plant or two in in a couple days. i have some java fern for it from my 46
oh and i have some rocks to throw in it

well, this is my first real attempt at a planted tank, and i am somewhat new to the hobby entirely, although i am hooked now.
i am thinking about putting java moss on the back wall, as well as the java ferns that i have in my 46. beyond that, i will be needing advice. so, if anyone has some suggestions, feel free.
here is a photo of the java fern on wood i have started in my 46 gallon. i would like it to grow all along the length of it. that will be going in pretty soon, i think
