I just picked up a 29-gallon tank without a stand. i am planning to set it up atop my entertainment center. the entertainment center is big and pretty solid. i will post a photo of it this afternoon, but it is about 4 feet high and 5 feet wide, and built solidly, doesnt wobble...
i feel like it would be fine, but i want to get some opinions before i do it.

Sounds likea pretty sold ET center. Something that size I would imagine could handle quite the TV and such. I would think you would be fine.
The only thing I was wondering, the spot where you plan to put the tank, is there and kind of cross support? and what is it made of?

Is there any supports directly under where the tank will sit.
That tank will weigh close to 300lbs full!

here is a similar entertainment center, same design. i was thinking about putting the tank on the right side of the entertainment ctr, but i could also put it on the left side...in both spots, there would be a support underneath.
any opinions on it?

Is it going on top?
It should be ok.Make sure the cabinet doesn't rock at all,it will be very top heavy!

yes, it will be on the top, and i will make sure it does not sway at all. my gut feeling is that it will be fine. i do not think i would put anything larger on it though.

Have you and a few other people climb on top and wiggle side to side and see if the stand moves. From the pic it seems like you'd be ok with the weight.

If you want to be overly cautious, lay a slab of 3/4" MDF or particle board on top of the entertainment center first, then put the tank on that. It will help disperse the weight even further and fight any tendency to bow the material underneath it. Make sure the whole thing is level front to back and side to side before filling the tank

Hmm are the electronics going to stay? And is the tank going to go on top of the stand?
I'm just imagining a water change gone bad or a leaking tank, leads to a fireworks show.

yeah, it is going to be on top, and there will be electronics nearby and below it. if it ever did start leaking that would be bad.
i do have a wooden table that i could put it on. i will put up a photo of it as soon as i can and start a brand new thread.
stay tuned for Will it Hold Pt 2

hehe, yes it would be very bad! Best not to tempt fate too much. A friend of mine bought a fairly cheap coffee table from walmart, and just added 2 extra legs to the middle. Been holding up his 40g w/o any probs. Think it was only about $20
