My CHINESE CRESTED! We picked up Maddie yesterday:19: I gave her a haircut today, and she looks great! Here's a before and after pic!!!
Oh wow!!! What a difference! I never would've recognized the pics as being the same dog! Great job...
...she's much cuter bald!!! How often will you have to shave her to keep the look...
...and...I was wondering if she'd actually be better off with the hair for winter?

Thanks :) Yes, she looks VERY different, but more like a "crested" should look. I'm not sure yet how often I'll have to do her, but I'm guessing about once a month maybe? It depends though on if I want her to stay "smooth". I can always take a mens electric shaver over her a couple of times a week to keep her smoother.
The hair that she had was only single layer, really thin hair. It really wasn't insulating her much at all against the cold. I put a coat on her when I take her out to help keep her warm. No matter what though, Cresteds aren't "outside" dogs, so she'll only really go out in the cold to go pee and poo, then come right back in.
She's such a sweetie! She's still holding back a lot though, as far as affection, but I'm sure once she has been here a while she'll warm up.
Knit that cutie a sweater!!! LOL...
I like her name too...
I have 4 dogs...2 seniors (10Y and 13Y) and 2 young dogs (1Y each)...
...one of the young ones is a mini-dachsie...smooth-coated...she does a bit better outside than I had anticipated...but also only goes out for a minute or so just to do her business...
...if we go for a car ride, I have to put a sweater on her, and take her blankie along...

Thanks Lauren!
We did get a few coats for her, but I wanted to show the pics of her clipped :) She's wearing a pink T-Shirt right now that says "Angel", and we got her a pink "trench coat" and a pink and grey coat. She came with a few sweaters too..but they are ugly, so I wanted to get her some pretty girly stuff. I'm not done yet though, this lady is going to have a bigger wardrobe than Vanna White ;)
I'm trying to deal with the razor burn she got on her face today. Do you have any experience with that Lauren? I'm thinking of putting aloe gel on it.

I've had that problem as well....I couldn't get my dog's face clipped short enough (couldn't get he clipper underneath the eye very well) so I would use my boyfriend's Sensor 3 razor on her (sans his knowledge).
I wouldn't go with aloe gel simply because it is gooey on the skin when it's wet (like when you first apply it or if the dog licks her lips) and when it's dry it tends to feel dry and cracked. By the way, my dog never told me these complaints...they're the complaints that I myself have about aloe gel!
If it's just her face, go with a good hand lotion. I used to use Curel brand on my dog. Eucerin and Lubriderm are good as well, but they're more greasy feeling, and you'll feel that grease everytime you kiss her face or touch her face. If you don't mind that, those are both good brands along with the Curel.
As for a moisturizer on her skin, I suggest asking her foster mom, especially since they're Crested rescuers. Moisturizers that are too greasy or comedogenic will give the dog blackheads on her body. It looks really bad and you will literally spend hours squeezing blackheads from her skin, just like we did from our faces when we were 16. Moisturizers that are too alcohol-y may irritate her skin. Again, ask the rescue what they recommend, and how often to apply.
Good luck with your new arrival...you're both very lucky to have found eachother!! thumbs2:

Normally i am not a real big fan of small dogs. Im afraid of stepping on them, really. But that one seems kinda cool. I was skeptical when we got our miniature schnauzer. My mom even picked the runt. But he ended up being 6-7 lbs more than a normal miniature schnauzer. And its not like hes fat either. He is taller than a miniature schnauzer too. Hes my best bud. He went hunting with me today. Best crow fetcher ive ever seen!

lol, yes a naked dog...you like that do ya? Whatever floats ur boat I guess ;) lol.
So far, she's great. My shadow. If I get up, she's there, watching where I go.
Chrona-I like Schnauzers too, except that they can be little PITA's on the grooming table sometimes, can be nippy, but I hear that their loyalty to their owners is incomparable to any other dog.
Lauren-My friend who shows her crested suggested Aveeno products. She says they're great, so I might just try those. The Rescue lady didn't seem to know too much about it. She has a True Hairless of her own and he has a lot of blackheads...so I guess she's not too concerned about the skin. Also, since Maddie was completely hairy, I doubt that she even grooms hers often if at all.

I was kinda thinking how much she'd look like a football if you rolled her the right way.......

It's ok Chrona. It takes a special kind of person to appreciate the beauty in a Chinese Crested when they're groomed. I think it's because I'm a groomer that I see it.
I also understand that a lot of ppl think they're "ugly", but I like their look because it's so unique :)

I have to agree with you Sarahmom. They are a very unique dog and because of that i find them quite attractive.

Their sweet and spunky personalities help too of course :) She is a real ham already. She digs at blankets until I lift them up, then she curls under and rolls herself around into a ball, and she'll stay like that for hours to sleep! It's so cute!
