I finally got rid of my old jumper guard, which was an ugly piece of egg-crate. I hated the way it looked and the amount of light that it blocked, so I ended up keeping it off much of the time when I was home (which kind of defeats the purpose of having it at all).
So a guy in my local reef club used the following technique. You buy a 36" screen kit and some bird netting at home depot (total cost around $20). You measure your top, cut the screen frame to fit, then use a screwdriver to attach the bird netting. The work was easy, just a little time consuming.
