Its simply probably the largest volume canister filter out there right now, so it can efficiently filter large volumes of water with large waste concentrations. Otherwise its not *that* special...it has some neat features and its pretty nifty looking, and you can usually get one on ebay for a decent price.

Actually the Eheim 2250 and 2260 have larger media capacity but the FX5 has higher flow rate.

if you want more media space there are easy mods that eliminate the sponges on the side and turn the entire canister into a media holder.

I have heard that if you remove the trays and setup the media yourself you can actually get a higher media capacity then any Eheim.

The tank rim adaptor and the intake strainer are MUCH better than Eheim's.

It comes with an instructional DVD in case you aren't used to using canister filters.

The dual output is definitely a nice way to ensure proper flow in a larger tank.

Great flow, max media capacity, easy to use, I can't think of anything they could improve.
