Well hello everyone. My main computer has been giving me alot of problems, one of which was no working internet. Now i am on a laptop, and i couldnt have been gone from here at a worse time. All of the guppies in one of my tanks have died. No apparent reason. Perameters were perfect, no ammonia no nothing. Corys are still fine though. And now for my saltwater question.

My SW tank has been cycling since the 15th. I have usually got ammonia of .5 ppm, but today i got a reading of 0 ppm, and my nitrites/ates are both high. Is this a good thing?

Great to be back. Went into withdrawl after awhile.

(chrona insert witty comment here)

Yes it's a good thing. Your ammonia eating bacteria is doing it's job. Now to get rid of the nitrites and you'll have a cycle. Make sure you do a big water change to get rid of those high nitrates before adding fish.

My computer is s-c-a-r-y right now to even use. NO antivirus! I got mad at it and delelted it and have to pick up another program stat.

So like 50-70% water change and then i can FINALY add some fish and live rock/mushrooms?

Nope, wait for nitrites to hit 0, lolz, then do large water change and add fish/etc

Absolutely positively make sure the LR you get is FULLY cured. If anything dies off in your tank, it'll cycle again.

so how long should it take for nitrites to hit 0? and do i have to add stuff right away?

No clue, since it depends on your setup, but it should only be a few days though. Yes you need to add stuff right away or the bacteria population will starve and die off. You can continue to add ammonia to sustain them of course, but this produces so much end nitrates that you'll have to do a water change before adding livestock.

Fudge........ Oh well. Would one damsel do the trick?

What do you mean? If you added in the damsel, yes it would continue cycling the tank, but damsels are pretty aggressive in such a small space, so you probably wouldn't be able to get anything else. Clowns on the other hand, can go with like a goby or something.

Well, im living on a broke drummers budget as of yet, so i dont have the mone to shell out 15 bucks on one fish. I was going to get 1 damsel and one cleaning shrimp with 4-5 lbs of LR and a small mushroom. all i can really afford right now would be the one damsel. Then the rock, then the shrimp, followed by the mushroom.

Do you know if i have to attatch the mushroom to the LR?

All of the mushroom corals at my LFS are on these ceramic plugs I believe. You stick it in the LR and epoxy it into place.

Aye, so just to clear things up, after mi nitrites are zero, ginourmous water Change, and one damsel should keep the cycle untill i get payed (the 15th of march)?

Chrona

Yep. You sure you want to get into corals now though?

FW said it would be cool to do a small mushroom just to get me started. I want to gain as much experiance with this as i can, because my neighbors parents want him and me to set up a 90 gallon marine tank in their front room

Cocoa, i saw the coolest thing at my lfs the other day. BLACK percula clowns. They still had the white stripes, and a LITTLE bit of orange on their chin, but other than that, they were JET black.

ive seen black perculas once. They look like little spy vs. spy fish. VERY cool

So does 4-5 lbs of LR, one damsel, one small cleaner shrimp, and a 2-3" mushroom sound good, too much, could i add more?

Chrona

10g tank right? More LR imo. It does a great job of breaking down ammonia/nitrite and nitrates. I think FW said like 1+ lbs per gallon, which is what most sites recommend too.

Well, for me to get 10 lbs of live rock, i would be looking at 65 dollars...... Not so cheap. Fully cured right?

So what do you thingk of the stocking?

Ugh, chrona as my mom, i just threw up again. Projectile vomit this time. Does it ever end?

No, my mere presence induces vomit. I was visiting Iraq when President Bush declared that they had WMD's, so technically, he wasn't lying.
