Hello, I was wondering how many cichlids i can fit in a 55gal?
Not sure what breed a want yet.

First you have to figure out what you want.
Try and stay with fish that get no bigger than 5-6",you will be able to have more and you will not need a larger tank in the very near future!
Remember to research and don't forget temperment and size of the fish so you can add more.

it will depend on the species you want and how much filtration you plan on using.

Make lots of caves/holes for them to take cover in. Slate rock, driftwood, and clay pots are a good bet.

given the size of the tank,you might want to go with one species of peacock [because they interbreed] or any of the less aggressive dwarf mbuna to get started rustys,yellow labs,Lab. chisulae [spell?] are fish that grow to say 4-6 inches. have plenty of rock cover [resin decor, logs, etc] and overstock to say 14-16 fish per tank i believe is recommended. of course heavy filtration and frequent water changes are in order. good luck
