View Full Version : Do guppies like current?

I kind of think they do!
I'm overfiltering my tank now, a Top Fin 10 and an AquaClear 20 on a 10-gallon and this has increased the current.
Initially I kept the AC's flow low so as not to make too much current. The guppies get bowled over if they cross in front of the AC.
However I've tried turning it up to maximum as well and the guppies seem to be thriving! All my existing members are doing great, extremely, extremely active, getting huge tails, and two new members introduced at the same time as the filter are doing well also. I got a German Yellow guppy - "Gunther" and a Turquoise guppy - "Big Turq". Gunther's tail has grown noticeably in the 6 days since we got him.
My older lyretail's tailfin is absolutely humungous now, almost as long as the rest of his body, and while my Blue Diamond guppy always had the nicest, biggest tail, it's even bigger lately.
So although there are spots in the tank where they have to work at the current, it doesn't seem to be doing them any harm because they seem very happy and healthy!

Mine seem to. I have 2 emperor 400's and a couple air stones on my 80 and they are always playing in the current. They'll catch the current from the water outlet down and ride the bubbles back up. It's a riot to watch.

If the fish have somewhere to get away from the current to rest it shouldn't be a problem.
I have two tens with 20s on them and they are always running on full.
My fish don't seem to mind and they don't look like body builders yet!:hmm3grin2orange:

They should be fine as long as they aren't visibly struggling to swim

I have an AC20 on my ten and the guppy guys seem to hang out at that end of the tank as much as the other...I was wondering about it too but they seem to enjoy and I've left mine on the high setting.

Thanks for the answers - now that I think about it, the guppies are going right up to the filter discharge on purpose. I thought it was too much for them but they keep coming back, they could avoid it if they wanted to but they don't.

They love swimming up and down in the airstone upswell.
Lately during water changes I'll keep the airstone on. They'll congregate around the airstone in a big writhing "guppy pile". I've noticed that since I've been doing this, they hardly get stressed at all during water changes.

It does go to show you they do have the same behaviour and that it's normal.

Do yours also like to play the "up and down" game?
Some of them like going to a tank wall and racing from the bottom up to the top and back again.
It seems to be addictive, when one starts to do it, others join in.
