Jenn's 5G Shrimp Tank

As all planted tanks, they evolve and even my tiny little 5G has evolved. It began its life on the shelf of a wallyworld, a lowly 5G kit on the bottom shelf:

Just some narrow leaf java fern, dwarf water lettuce, anarchis, xmas moss tied to a grid on the back wall to hopefully one day form a "moss wall".

Ive added 2 Anubias nana, 4 petite anubias and better positioned plus added a few more stones. Ive also got an Apon bulb sprouting for another tank in there. The narrow leaf has filled in a bit more, and the moss wall which I thought I was gonna have to write off is starting to work...and naturally the anarchis has grown:14:

The dwarf water lettuce has also almost doubled...its getting some nice roots now to. You can see a bit of aluminum foil hanging down to the right in that pic as well...these incandescent hoods have really crappy reflectors but some plain old heavy duty reynolds wrap can do alot for a 15watt screw in CF bulb. lol

Shrimp are here! They arrived last Thursday and after a few days to settle in they are doing very well. They are much smaller than I expected, I ordered 25 but Im not sure how many there are as they were honestly to small to count. The largest of them being right at 1/4" with the others being only 3-4milimeters. I did some Macro shots of them and considering their size and my point and shoot camera, the pics arnt to bad :22:

They are great, have you checked from other hobbyist? I got my 25 shipped for $20...the small ones seem to ship really well, best I could tell there were no losses in my package and they shipped from CA to VA just by standard priority mail.

Another update...I had a bit of filament algae growing on a java fern leaf so I did a switch up on my maintenance routine. Ive been doing a 10% WC on mondays and thursdays adding each time 1/4ml of Flourish Comp, and now 1/2ml of Excel. The results are....

This has definatly been my most successful planted tank, and consequently the smallest. The cherry shrimp are doing quite well, I believe that my doseage of Flourish and use of a HOB with a piece of largeish pore black foam on the intake has sort of curbed breeding. Which I honestly dont have a problem with as I dont need 300 cherry shrimp, Ill see the occassional fry shrimp but nothing like I expect it should be with no less than 10 mature females. I do plan to order 20 more super red cherries when temps get a bit better for a grand total of about 45 that I have put in the tank. There is 25 in there now and I dont see many of them at a time due to the jungle.

Sure you can keep fish in a tank this size, probably some of your best will be Microrasboras, Pygmy Rasboras or something along that like. Alot of these fish grow to 1" or less in size and a small shoal would do very well in the tank. You could aso naturally keep a single betta or dwarf puffer in the tank.

I was using tap water and the water company must have dumped some crazy chemicals in to control algae or pests this summer because I lost all but that 1 shrimp. They were totally fine and starting to breed regularly, so note to other shrimp keepers use 80-90% RO water mixed with just a little tap water...its safer that way.

Its alright, Ive known of quite a few cherry shrimp keepers go through the same thing this year. Theyre a hardy species so they dont have to have RO water, and most people myself included just went with tap. Unfortunatly water companies dump tons of chemicals into the water storage tanks in the summer to kill off bacteria and algae so its safe for consumption, these traces are unfortunatly enough to kill alot of people's inverts. I'll be buying another load of shrimp in the next week or so...hopefully I can find more from a near solid red strain :22:

I just started a thread asking for suggestions on a planted 5g I have that lost its Betta occupant.

I was toying with the idea of shrimp, and now I have some serious envy over your beautiful tank!! I'm sold on the idea, because I can have lots of them without overstocking.

I've never kept inverts before, so this is new territory for me. Thanks for posting all those gorgeous tank pics - seeing them was inspiring!!

What would you have done if you didn't have access to RO water?

RO is pretty easily found, you can buy pre-bottled water at walmart, or even run your own from one of their machines. But if that isnt an option then you can pre-filter your tap water in a holding container like another bare empty tank or a rubermaid with some of these wonderful chemical medias today that damn near remove everything known to mankind from the water. I do like Purigen and PolyFilters as far as chemical media goes :22:

Just an update. I had procrastinated around and never re-ordered shrimp, and my neighbor called me asking if I wanted some guppies they had in a fish bowl their kid got tired of. This has became a habbit for those people...dump the unwanted pets off on Jenn...shell take them all. So I did, one of the guppies was in sour shape so I euthanized it. I have the other 2 in the 5G tank for now they seem to be in good shape...Ill probably pick up another one to make 3 sometime this week. The plants have also filled in since Ive been keeping the water lettuce in check :22:

Most planted tanks go through a rough stent, my 55G has been proof of that lol. This one for whatever reason has been trouble free from day one, I assume its because I loaded it down with plants instantly and only do minimal ferts, with the slow growing plants and low lighting. I dont vacuum the subsrate...its been setup nearly a year and has never had a vac. Planted tanks usually ton "require" substrate vacuuming as the plant roots will use the detris as fertilizer. Of course that does mainly apply to heavily planted tanks, those with open spaces should be vacuumed every so often.

I hope you aren't getting sick of all the comments. Your tank looks great and I enjoyed your entire aquarium journal. Would you mind explaining what you used the reynolds wrap for and why it was necessary?

Not at all, the comments here are very much appreciated. I use the tinfoil to help bounce some of the light down into the tank. Im using a GE screw in CF bulb from the household section in the incandescent hood...the reflector is a very flat grey and doesnt do much its also much smaller than my bulb. I used some electrical tape and taped in some tinfoil all around behind the bulb so that it acts as a reflector...it works much better than the provided one. You can actually see a fairly big difference in the tank without it than with it.

This tank and gotten *way* overgrown to the point you couldnt really see anything but various green leaves. I honestly think there were more plants than water in this tank. Not to mention my near year of constant neglect had made for a pretty gross substrate :hmm3grin2orange:

So I netted out the ghost shrimp and the remaining female cherry into a bowl and tore the tank appart today. I rinsed the substrate in dechlorinated tap water and got it back to a presentable level of clean. I also put back a fraction of the plants. I removed an 8"*6" mat of thick needle leaf, split my C.lutea in half and took out the two small A.congensis. The removed plants will be going into the 150...they fill half of a 2G bucket if that tells you how overgrown this thing was.

Did you use the filter that came with it or use a diff one? I am in the process of setting mine up and the filter seems kind of cheap, but I ran it for a little while and it was awful quiet.

Those regent filters arnt bad, they are made by marineland so are essentially penguins without the biowheel. I ran it on the tank when it contained shrimp, its to strong for the betta so Im going tomorrow to look for something slower...but the filter has never given me any problems.

Thanks Amy, I cleared out a slew of plants when I broke it down...Im hoping those anubias nana grow and fill in on the right side but I doubt Im gonna do much more with it. I may try some 4leaf clover as a forground...or get more petite since I took them out of here for the 8" cube.

I broke down and ordered a Tom Rapids Dive Clean Mini Filter. I like how it is only around 45GPH and has a spraybar...it should be adequate for the light bioload of the tank but still provide decent enough circulation thats gentle enough for the betta. Plus it only cost $12 so thats a perk.

Got the filter in, and Im trying out a white background...it makes the tank look brighter than black did...and it does show the plants nicely. Only problem is it reflects things...should have used flat paint instead of glossy.

I beefed up the white background so its not transparent anymore. I also added a couple of petite to the front.

I can't believe this thread is still active after 1 1/2 years. LOL I really like it now and especially noticeable was the change in color of the substrate. Darkening it up some gave it a nice subdued look. Awesome job, Jenn.

How many shrimp can you put into a 5 gallon tank?

I would start with 20-30 shrimp, when your herd gets to around 75 Id thin them back down.

Do you think that a Peacock Eel would be an apropriate tanke mate, or would it find it as a tasty treat?

Peacock Eels grow far too large for a 5G and would probably eat your shrimp.

Ah...well then the peacock eel is a good fit but will still eat your shrimp. IME it is best to go with a shrimp dedicated tank of even 2G vs having them in a community setup.

The betta is well, he has moved into my divided 10G with 2 other male HMPK bettas. This tank has taken on saltwater status at the moment, it is at work currently as well.
