View Full Version : Are these things worth the money?

Has anyone used this? It looks neat, but it is a bit pricey. I want to get a Betta and I refuse to go with anything less than 5g, wanted 10g, but then I saw this. I think it would be plenty big enough, and a Betta would look really good in it! I just really do not want to spend the money if it is a crummy tank. Any one have an opinion on this? :help:

[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

This was kinda cool looking too, but not as much as the first one.

Or I could just go with a plain old 10g.

They just got new Bettas in at Petsmart, and I have to say for once they all look very very good! There is a male I have my eye on. He is really pretty, he had poo in there and he has made a bubblenest. They even have some really pretty females!! IDK If I want to get a female too though. They would fight right?

Ok well enough of my babble, any opinions or advice is welcomed and appreciated! :help:

You could try making your own tank im whichever shape or futuristic design you'd like!

Shouldnt be too difficult in a relatively small size, be an interesting adventure too

Males and females can only be kept together if you have a large tank.

I would go with a plain 10g. It gives you more options for filtration, heating, etc. With the two you mentioned you are locked into their equipment which inevitably will be more expensive. Plus you can even get a 10g kit that includes a filter and hood for cheaper than both of those.

Yeah I am not very good at that sort of stuff!! LOL It would probably leak everywhere!!! And being a single mom, school, and all of my other pets I really do not have time to try to make one on my own.

If I were going to spend $230 on a 8 gallon tank,I would get a nano reef tank.Actually you can get those cheaper than that anymore.I don't think it would be worth it for that kind of money.
I have two, five gallon Eclipse tanks for a couple of my Bettas.I changed the light bulbs in them and have them planted.Never had a problem with either one of mine.I would reccomend them.

ok fair enough, just a suggestion. Id say go with the 10g then, far better value for money

Yeah I think a 10g kit is like $65. I guess that is what I will do then. Maybe if I get black background, black gravel it would look ok. And I guess it would be easier to get it going, I could just jump start it with one of my filters and get them in there pretty quick instead of waiting it out with starting from scratch. That tank just looked so cool.

So is 10g big enough for a male and female? If I put lots of plants and stuff in there? I have never kept a pair. (They have this one that is really pretty she is all sorts of bright blues with a just a bit of red at the tips of her fins and the male I want is light blue, with dark blue specs all over him, and one lone dark blue stripe down his massively huge tail)

LOL No Ray it is not for an Oscar. I am not going to get one until after I move, I figure that would be easier. I am going to look at some houses this weekend, so hopefully I will be moving soon.

$230 is A LOT of money for a betta tank. So is $130.

For what it's worth, I have an eclipse 5 corner and it is a solid tank, and ABSOLUTELY SILENT.

No, it is far too small.

Ok cool! I always feel guilty for only getting one of anything. LOL But I really only wanted the male.

There must be a small tank on Craig's List!
Garage sales. You could a ten complete for cheap enough.I'm sure someones goldfish died for unknown reasons lately!

LOL Ray! I am sure there are, but I do not want to spend a bunch of time finding the tank and stuff.
I really want to get that one male!! The longer I wait the more likely he will get sick or depressed in that little container on a shelf with like 50 more. I hate how they keep them! They always look terrible when I go to petsmart, but these looked great!! I waited before to get one because of that, this may be only chance to get a healthy one for like a year!! LOL

I agree on the ten gal. vs. the built in tank with everything. First off, what if they discontinue making filters for it at some point?

Also, I'm not so much a fan of the "kits" 'cause usually it's a standard tank and then you pay for a bunch of crap that's either substandard or not what you need. I got a 10gal with hood, light, filter on craigslist for $40 including a wood stand, gravel, heater, the siphon hose, and a scrub brush.

And a stupid taped-on thermometer that isn't worth a platy-poop!

Oh, believe me, I know a LOT about platy-poop. Those little buggers sure know how to crank them out. -_-

Ok so I have another question. I want to try a live plant for him, I have read that Java Moss is really easy, so I guess I will look for that at the store. But can I add it right away? And do I need only one plant or many plants?

TOOO much $ to spend for a beta imo =O

Could find an amazing setup on craigslist for that price, and get some real fish =p

Not being mean, just saying...

sorry <3

You can add it right away. But I haven't had any luck finding it in the LFS. If you get the 10g kit swap the bulb out for a ~15-20W 6500K compact fluorescent bulb. That should grow plants quite well.

I have one of the 12g bowfront eclipse systems right now... have had it for a while now. It houses my African Clawed Frog... Haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. The only thing that bothers me is the hole in the top to feed the fish is big enough to drop food in. But if you want to reach down in there the filter half blocks the hole so you can't get your hand in very far. So when I hand feed my ACF I need to take the whole top off.

Otherwise its a great little setup... has the light, and filtration built into it. The filter flows nicely and keeps the setup very clean! If I can find a larger female ACF for my male I am going to move him, and turn the 12 into either a nano-reef or a shrimp tank!

Good luck with whatever you choose! thumbs2:

Hi Hun

Just my opinion but I would avoid biorbs like a plaugue. My mum stated with one of the round ones, to change the expensive filter, you have to remove the rock, unscrew and then pull up the central colloum, try to reasemble, mum had trubles with this and sometimes it would all undo and the carbon would fall all over the floor.

then you ahve to try and put it back in without squshing a fish, They also get a scum mark on the plastic.

Just my htoughts

Wow that does not sound any good! I guess maybe the new age stuff looks cool, but the good old fashioned stuff is still the best way to go. TY for all the comments and help everyone!

I have a couple of eclipse tanks, and the proprietary filter problem is easily solved by a wad of polyester fiber fill jammed into the filter tray. Mine are both very quiet, and have bio wheels; providing really good filtration. I don't hesitate to suggest the 5,6 or 8 gall models for a betta.

If you're worried about someone else buying the betta, I'd just go and buy him and put him in a bucket until you get a tank for him. I had to put mine in a bucket while I was mod'ing his filter once, and he loved it, blew bubblenests every day. It was only for a few days and I changed some of his water every day.

Better than letting someone else snatch him up:)

You know that is a good idea!! I just was not sure how safe it was for the fish. I know it sounds silly because they are there in those tiny darn containers with no heat or filter or air bubblers no plants....... and they are alive, some even look happy.
I have a 2 gallon fish bowl that is just sitting there empty and a bunch of fake plants I do not use in the other tanks. I could probably keep him there for a few days, with an air stone under a light.

With some live plants in there they will help with water quality. I have an unfiltered betta tank which is about 15 litres, and I only need to change 50% once or twice a week..

get a low light plant that has big leafs that go just about to the top of the water line bettas will sleep on them mine never had far to go to get air in the middle of the night he loved that plant it was in a 8 gallon tank with a under gravel filter only cleaned it once a week with 50% water change for 3 years and it cost about 50.00 bucks had a 6 neons in it, as long as they stayed away from the top leaf their was no problem my ex's kid tried to take him to school in her back pack for show and tell you now how that ended not good i put the betta in after the neons were in their for about a week
