On Friday afternoon, a mate thought he would go have a nap, by 7pm the kids he had taken in a fter his sister died, (I am talking 5 kids, and this bloke was single and never married) thought he was sleeping a little long, when they checked on him, he did not wake up, he was only in his late 40's.

Makes you think, no matter how old you are, make the best of your life and what you have.

Aw, that's a real shame. Must've been hard to take in kids like that. I hope the kids will be ok.

This is very sad. He had to be a special man to accept the responsiblilies of 5 children especially when he was single and had no help. Do they feel it was a heart attack? My son had a heart attack at 32 but fortunately, his outcome was much better than that of your friend. Thank God.

What will happen with these kids now?

Oh Crackatinny, I am so sorry to hear that, I can feel the pain of you and those children. Hopefully you guys will get thru it all and someone will be able to provide those children with another loving home so they don't end up in the system to be destroyed.

Crackatinny,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to your friend and his family. He seemed like a good man and may he rest in peace.

I too had a friend who had a heart attack at 32.....at 32!!! He was slim build, social drinker, non-drugging, average diet, smoked an average amount. All of a sudden...bam!....has a heart attack and was nearly pronounced dead. They finally revived his heart and now, thanks to his diligence and self-discipline, he is in better shape than than he was pre-heart attack. He attended ALL the classes that were recommended (there was a meeting nearly every night), and works out every morning, 6 times a week. His eating habits became so good it made mine look like I'm a caveman. Obviously, the last cigarette he had was on the day of his heart attack. It's been 10 years and he's the healthiest person I know. His heart attack was due to pure genetics, so you can imagine that his older brother was shaking in his boots!

The things he has accomplished in his life are amazing, even more so considered his success is wholly and purely self-made. He is without doubt one of my top 3 most admired people I've known in my life. Every day I regret that I no longer am in contact with him, but I know he's out there, somewhere in the world, kicking ass like he's always done.

Sorry to hear about your friend... Not that there is a truly light side of this but I have had most of my family die of cancer and had to see them in pain for months or years before passing, to die in your sleep is better than to shrivel away slowly. 40 is just too Darn young to go though. One of my friends right now is fighting lung, bone, colon, cancers... he started 6 years ago at 190 lbs, he's down to about 125 and I don't know how much fight he has left. Sorry if I've run on a bit...

Thanks everyone for your kind words.
At this stage I think thhe kids will go to his sisters up the coast, I really feel sorry for them, they are great kids.
He had lung problems, but being so sudden, I guess there will be an autopsy.

Just a followup for those who had asked about my mates nephew's welfare after his death, and what he died from.

He was buried today in a lovely graveside service, it was really hard on the kids. As far as I know, they will go to his other sisters in Sydney.

After an autopsy, it seems it was not his lung problem that took his life, but a stroke.

It was mentioned in the service, that the reason he had the kids, it was a promise to his sister on her deathbed, that he would take care of them, and he did so for 4 years.

Which in my books, makes him one remarkable bloke.

Thanks all for your kind words about this subject, there was a few years age difference between me and Speed, but we partied hard many a night, what seems like many moons ago.
