I stopped in Walmart today and was greeted by nearly empty shelves in the fish section instead of their normal 2 whole shelves that held nothing. While standing there griping about it, this lady come up and told me that PetSmart is moving into my town. Oh My Gawd. I was so excited I forget to buy what I went in Walmarts for!
Those of you who don't care much for PetSmart probably don't understand all this excitement but when you have a choice of PetSmart or nothing........it's this all the way!:19: :19: :19:
I am not dumb enough to believe that my email to their cooperate office had anything to do with it, but I did write them last summer and told them that it's over an hours drive each way to a PetSmart in this area and if they're ever looking for new areas, to please consider this one. I actually got a nice note back from them which shocked me!
There goes my humungous problems of always trying to get more tanks....and food....and meds...and everything!
A trip to Home Depot got me 100 pounds of Play Sand for $7.58. BTW......play sand is washed and sterilized for childrens use.
I also bought a fine- toothed hack saw so I could cut the extra 6 inches off my Emporer uplift tube. (Those with Emporers.....why do they make these things so darned long.) AND......I went to the Family Dollar Store and got one quart of pure ammonia for $1.
I am one happy camper right now. Hope it doesn't take forever for them to open their doors!

Hobbs, I'm happy for you. PetSmart may not be the best way.. but it's gotta be a large step up from WalMart..

I sent cooperate another email today and told them I had heard they were opening a store here and was very happy to hear it.
This is their answer to my email.

Congrats on the new upcoming Petsmart!
I go there all the time...they have the best prices (aside from Walmart) on items that are the most popular.
I too once wrote a letter to the Petsmart corporation. I wrote in praise of one of their stores...its cleanliness, order, animals in good health, and being well-stocked was unusual to see in NYC, and their store was exemplary. I also came across more than one very friendly employee, which again, in NYC is absolutely unheard of. Perhaps I just got lucky on the day that I went, but I appreciated being pleasantly surprised and I wrote a letter stating so. I actually got a response from someone of executive positioning (I remembered it was an executive title because that really shocked me), telling me that they wanted my permission to reproduce my letter/statement to use in their quarterly corporate report. I thought that was so awesome and it totally made my day.
Kudos to you, Hobbs, for taking the time and having the motivation to write letters for what you believe in.

I used to. There's a Petsmart on Staten Island near the Bayonne Bridge, and as far as I know, that's the only location near NYC. There's one in Nanuet too, if you're up by the Tappan Zee. And Paramus, NJ, if you happen to be outlet shopping and decide you need pet supplies. There's also a Petco down the street that I would go to on the same trip...the Petco was not in good shape, hence walking into the Petsmart comparably was akin to entering heaven complete with singing angels.

I thought it was just me and that I was setting up my tank wrong!
My intake is almost touching gravel. I actually had to make a small ditch in the gravel to accomodate the intake tube's length.

That is quite the parking ticket for sure! What did you do, park an 18 wheeler across a busy highway or what?

Something I have NEVER done in my entire life...accidentally parked in a handicapped. The parking lot's lights were all blown out (there were only like two working lights in the entire lot), and the "Handicapped Parking Only" sign that's supposed to greet you when you pull in (and make a mistake like I did), was missing. The ground was painted with the blue handicapped parking outline, but when there's only two lights in the whole freaking lot, it doesn't help you out.
Everyone's next question is: Why didn't you fight the ticket?
My answer to everyone is: Have you ever been to traffic court in NYC? It's so bad that no matter how legitimate your claim is, no matter if you get signed affidavits from witnesses, no matter if you take photographs and get them notarized by the President of the United States himself, you will still be found guilty. The only way you have an iota of a chance is if you hire an attorney, costing you way more than the price of the ticket. I certainly didnt' want to pay the two hundred, but believe me, it's not worth the fight.
If you think $200 is funny, it gets better. There's a list of fines on the back of the ticket telling you how much you have to pay for each offense you're ticketed with. It's $200 for handicapped parking, but running your car up over the curb and driving on the sidewalk only costs you $175! I would have been financially better off barrelling up onto the sidewalk and scattering pedestrians all over the street! Can you believe that??....To this day I still can't!!!
A friend of mine got a ticket in New Jersey for parking in a handicapped. It was slightly worse for her. While her ticket was only $150, in New Jersey it's a mandatory court date for certain offenses...handicapped parking included. She had to take the day off work, pay the ticket, get yelled at by the judge, then pay court fees on top of it.

correct. new jersey includes the offense of illegally parking in a handicapped zone a mandatory court appearance. the infraction is now 250.00 though. welcome to new jersey! lol

I've only gotten one ticket, and that was for speeding. Of course, since it was a 368 dollar ticket, it kinda makes up for it. I was going 80 in a 65 zone. Apparently, if I had been going 79, it would have been 100 bucks. Go figure. I swear I saw the cop finishing a donut as he pulled me over though.

i used the short intake for my bio-wheel. Who the hell makes a intake for 10g's and they only fit 10g high tanks when the majority are rectangular tanks?

I keep my uptakes about 2 inches from the gravel. That's fine but when I got my Emperor, the thing was so bloody long that I never used the one piece so my strainer was way up in the upper part of the tank. What could does that do! I know using sand I had to cut my uptake in my Penguin off a couple inches so ended up also cutting 7 inches off the Emperor, as well, so could use that the right way, as well.
I can see the need for those long uptake tubes with xtra high tanks but in that case, they should just give you an extension piece or at least sell you one. I had to pay $8 for a saw to cut it down and that didn't set too well with me. LOL

why cant they just make models for long tanks, tall tanks, and rectangular tanks, and if you suddenly sell your long tank for a tall tank you can buy a new intake for your filter?
