I just ordered some stuff online for my upcoming tank, an Aqua-Nova NCF1500 filter for AU$99 and a 4 outlet air pump for AU$20.
Before ordering, I checked out local prices, the LFS only had a Aqua-nova NCF1200 at a cost of AU$195, and the same pump for AU$60.
Even with postage, I saved 50%, and got a bigger filter, I can't see how local shops justify that, It is highway robbery.

I've spent a bunch online but saved a bunch online as well. Some of the stores will ask $50 and more than what you can get a canister for online and even the food, meds, etc, are cheaper on line.
I have the Python vac ordered right now for $23 and WalMarts has it for $32.
Have you heard anything about the Cascade filter by Penn-Plax? I'd never heard of it but got my magazine today and it lists this filter and it has a lot of good features......auto prime button, handle for carrying, 4 big baskets, flow rate adjustment, etc. All the things the better canisters have. Just hadn't heard of it.

Stores are still cheaper for some stuff, like fish and anything heavy :)
A lot of stores have to charge that much, because online stores don't have to cope with the massive amount of retail space needed, and the taxes that come with it. They can just pile everything in a small warehouse. If you looked into it, you'd probably find highway robbery everywhere. That Python vac? Yep, probably made in China for the equivalent of 2-3 US dollars. That 200 dollar Eheim canister? Probably cost them 30 bucks to make it...lol
Online stores usually also draw from a distributer that is higher up, so there are fewer middlemen.
