Well I have had to split my 2 lake victorian Males up. ( thank goodness I have spare tanks ) These two decided to really have a go tonight.
Here are some pics. ( No major dammage to fish ). The fight was between The male Hap. Sp CH44 " Thickskin " & The male Hap Brownae " Cherry Red "

After these last shots it was getting quite out of control. They were so intent on eachother I just put the net in and caught one. I will get his females out of there tomorrow.

Very nice pictures! Great example of rival males utilizing color as dominance signals.

After these last shots it was getting quite out of control. They were so intent on eachother I just put the net in and caught one. I will get his females out of there tomorrow...

As long as they're facing off with each other (each holding their own) the situation isn't quite out of control (it becomes out of control when one participant submits yet the aggressor doesn't let up and tries to finish him off in one-sided fashion). If that was what was happening they indeed needed to be separated.

In certain scenarios, however, the defeated male will retreat or submit (never to challenge the dominant again) and this action will satisfy the victor (which has earned the alpha position in the tank and holds no grudge), which can actually bring about peace in the tank (undisputed dominant will only take on challengers...no challengers equate to greatly reduced aggression).

Thanks Kabee for the feed back. Yes even though one of the males did back off the other one still tried to go for him. I gave them a chance to sort out there differences. Save having ripped fins worse than they are now I took action and split them.:ssmile:

The fish are fine this morning. Just a few chunks out of the fins. No major damage.:ssmile:

Thanks guys.

I found rather quickly that I had to separate my ruby greens and P. nyererei. The ruby greens just aren't as aggressive overall; no damage done but they were looking pretty stressed.
I have a single male P. nicholsi sharing the tank with the nyererei. he faces off with the dominant male Hap occaisonally, but nothing comes of it. I had to move the other male nicholsi to another tank though, he has a ragged tail fin from the other nicholsi harrassing him. There are 3 females in the tank with the ruby greens, just waiting for some time to set them up with a proper breeding tank.

I think it just comes with the territory toddnbecka. Sure makes for a more active tank. :ssmile:
