If you are allergic to bee stings it is a good idea not to handle them.

Lol! I guess I should have specified just "handling" them, not eating them. :hmm3grin2orange:

Thanks!

I'm not sure if it was this site or not but last year one member was crushing up dried bloodworms for fry, like she had done many times before.A little while later her husband found her on the couch unable to breathe. Her throat had swollen shut, had her husband not rushed her to the hospital she would not have made it!
So yes take caution if you are not sure. She crushed it with her fingers over the tank.I don't beleive it was inhaled.

Humm, I have not ever had a problem, but I guess you can be allergic to just about anything. Just take precautions like gloves, if you do not know.

Im deathy allergic to bloodworms. I used to feed my fish frozen and FD bloodworms Id follow normal practices pinching out dried ones into the tank, or thawing frozen cubes and spooning into the tanks. I had used them since I got serious into the hobby by that time about 8 years, until one day I broke out into hives, my eyes had almost swollen shut and my throat had swollen shut as well. I spent a good bit of time in the hospital and they told me if I had waited another 1/2 hour to get there I probably wouldnt have survived. I used to make my SO or mom feed my fish bloodworms but I noticed that even if I did a WC with bare skin exposed in the tank I would start to itch if the fish had eaten bloodworms recently. So I dont use them at all anymore :22:

Its too bad that most don't know until it hits.I don't think it would be part of an allergy test unless you specifically ask for it.
Thats if anyone gets allergy tests anymore!
Glad you found out in time Jenn! We would hate to lose you!:22:

Wow! That is very scary! :ssuprised: Maybe I won't bother buying any. I wanted some freeze dried ones for my Betta. I notice too that since I have gotten older, I am starting to be allergic to more stuff. Maybe I won't chance it then. Thanks everyone! thumbs2:

I think that if your a person prone to allergies its a safe bet you should be careful when feeding your fish once living foods. Now even with other frozen foods like brine or mysis shrimp or whatever I wear a surgical mask and gloves...I do the same with freeze dried foods as well and always wash my hands after handling any fish foods like that.

I sprinkle them into the lid and into the tank.No touching.
I don't know what it would take for a doc to test you with it.You may just have to bring some in so he make a test.

Agreed, just invest in some gloves, if you want you can get some nice coralife ones or something similar and they will do pretty much forever for all your aquatic needs, but latex should do fine for this(assuming you arent allergic! :hmm3grin2orange: )

I take the bloodworms out of the container with my fingers..but then again im not the smartest cookie when it comes to my health

I do have some latex gloves around here somewhere. I am the kind of person that uses my fingers for stuff too, washing them of course when I get done. thumbs2: I always thought using latex gloves would hurt the fish? I am always so afraid something will wash off and kill them. :scry:

It is better safe than sorry for sure! I am not prone to allergies, but you just never know. I didn't use to be allergic to maple nut ice cream either. The last time I had it, I nearly choked to death from a swollen throat. Not any fun. :scry:

Wow, news to me! Guess you learn something new every day. Never knew you could be allergic to bloodworms. I feed my barbs FD blood worms a couple times a week, but have never really touched them. Luckily I'm not allergic to anything that I know of.

You can buy non-latex powder free gloves at walmart...I forget what theyre called but theyre usually really random fun colors and have "non latex" on the box. I use those as I am allergic to latex as well, lol

Yea, i meant for the purpose of handling the bloodworms, not for sticking in the tank. They dont really work well for those type of purposes.

The Coralife type gloves will work for both purposes though, a lot of Sw junkies own some, ive been meaning to grab some as well.

I also have latex free gloves since my fiancee is algeric, apparently a lot of people are.
