View Full Version : Puffer needs a name

Believe it or not, but just as I was heading into thinking I could relax Sunday night....the funeral was done, my 3 day drunk was done (no hangovers BTW ) and was looking towards getting my family and life back onto some sort of schedule, I get an email......the red miurus puffer (congo puffer) I had been looking for for the longest time ( or it seems like forever anyway) is in stock at the supplier. If I get to the store by noon Monday, they can have him ordered and he will be home Tuesday to me. Now, what do you all think I did??????? First, I tell Hubby "you are not going to believe this", then of course go into all the reasons why I SHOULD NOT pay $50 for a puffer that will not come with a guarantee, only to start the mental rearranging of tank inhabitants to open up a tank!!
I kept busy the rest of Sunday night and the next day changing my 65 to sand bottom so my kuhli's and clown loaches can go there, and of course running up and paying for the puffer. I could have waited 2 weeks and had him ordered on the next shipment.....yea right, like I want this guy to sit at the suppliers when he can be home with me! Come noon on Tuesday my tank is waiting for my new puffer, only to get a phone call.....the shipment got held up at the airport, and he won't be here until Wednesday.
All is well, he is home with me, and ate his first ghost shrimp finally tonight while I was at work. He is a tetraodon miurus puffer, commonly called congo puffer, from congo basin, Africa. Check out these pics and tell me he is not beautiful!!! And then keep your fingers crossed that he thrives and grows to his full potential.

Great looking fish, around here we seem to only get the run of the mill varieties.
In the 3rd pic down he seems to have an, I don't take no sh#t look on his face, so I would go for something like Brutus

Wow! Some very interesting names.....maybe I will give it a few days, collect them all and have my very first poll. That will give me time to get some better pics too....those were the day he came home so there is alot of distraction from the specimen container.
Honestly don't know if it is male or female, I just have a tendency to give the male distinction to something I know will be aggressive as it gets larger, so a name either way works.
I did not find him "commonly" around here, this was a special order after much research on the internet, combined with just plain luck. I had contacted and searched thru probably close to a hundred suppliers, websellers, aquabid etc without luck. I finally decided to re-check Segrest, the supplier for Petsuppliesplus, and low and behold they had them on the list of species they carry. I sent an email, and also talked to one of the better employees at PSP, who was working on making it possible for me to order one. We went back and forth for a couple of weeks without much success and I had finally given up when I got the email that they were in! I think the gentleman from Segrest got annoyed at me because I contacted him about 2 species of puffs, and he finally told me it is not their practice to deal direct with the purchaser.....they only supply retail! Oh well, I wanted to make sure that when I ordered this guy, I was getting what I wanted.
Keep the name suggestions coming!

Wow they are some creative names LOL
I learned that from when I worked at the shelter. You're forced to be creative when you intake 250 animals in a month, and have to come up with names for them all (and not repeat the same names for at least a year, otherwise there's confusion). My managers would come up with names that sometimes made me laugh outloud.
We once had a dog that was kinda on the dopey side and not so bright, and he was named Shortbus. This might just be an american thing, but here in the US the "special ed" kids (ie., slow learners, special needs kids) would all ride a school bus that was smaller than the average bus. Hence the joke, if someone said you "take the short bus" it meant you were mentally slow.
Another one that comes to mind was a kitten named Billie Jean. A man named Michael Jackson found the stray kitten and brought it in. Geez, wouldn't you at least go by the name Mike Jackson?...or by your middle name?? Later that day a few more kittens came in and we put them in the same cage as Billie Jean. They were named Sequin Glove, Moonwalk, and Beat It.
In that same vein, we also had kittens named Afro Sheen and Jheri Curl. There was another litter named Ghetto Brother and Soul Sister.
There were so many funny names like that that I can't remember them all.

If your fish is indeed a female, you can just add an "a" onto the end of all my name suggestions.
Except for Pinkie Tusca-doo-doo. Pinkie was a girl, so you could keep it the same.

No I was poking fun at Puff daddy and how he changes his name every 3 months, so you could do the same for the fish. Ie P diddy, Puffy, etc.

There are some very creative people on here. Right now, I am leaning towards Poppy, I liked the way Papaya sounded when I was saying it, and when I shortened it to Pappy I came up with Poppy, and the poppy is something that goes along with my American Legion involvement and it is a nice red flower! Of course, this goomer will not have a flower like temperment unless you think of venus flytrap!!!!

Oh Lauren....thanks for making me smile, laugh and giggle all at once! You truly have a talent for naming, I'll be they love trying to outdo you at the shelter.
Hopefully life will calm down some this week and I will go on a photo frenzy and update all new pics. I finally got some of my photo software in the new puter, but it still is glitching with vista, will have to wait for updates or buy the newer versions. I really don't like buying a newer version once I have gotten comfortable with my old versions. I'll bet I have purchased 20+ photo editing programs over the years, and one of my true favorites is so old it will never work, but I keep going back to it!

While it does sound like an incantation, it's what Kimmers should name her fish because it is the moniker of a Gladiator! Just think of it Kimmers, you could have a true Roman warrior of a fish! All hail Poppy Tomato Joe Meridius! Ave!!

I am not very good at naming pets...lol I have a cat named Pawz and past cats were whiskas, meow, and trouble and a bunny named bunny rabbit...lol. We had a dog with ADHD...lol no lie, We named him Askim...so when someone asked his name we would say Askim(Ask him) and they thought we were joking...loved that hyper a$$ dog...sadly he broke free from his leash at the park ran off into the woods and never came back.
So with all that said I think you should ask Lindsay she loves naming fish...at least I think it was Lindsay.

After lots of thinking I came up with a few names that could be for your puffer....I dunno how quick ur fish is but these names would be for a fast one,the first one is bullet and the other is Rocket, then ya have Beau(Bo), Hercules, Augi, and Mac. Then I went ahead and googled pet fish names and I actually found a list..can you believe that...the one I love from the list was "General Finn"...how perfect for a fish...lol Oh yea I think I remember seeing someone named their betta "Napoleon"? That made the list...I didn't find many of my fishes names I think just two or three.
Here is a link to the list if I can get it copied if not imma just copy the whole list and paste it.
