A little crazy, but this past weekend I went to feed my fish in the morning as I usually do, and as soon as I threw in the food, my one mature tiger barb started to swim very excitedly, jump out of the water and I guess hit himself against the light fixture and fell back in the water dead! This was all in a matter of seconds right before my eyes! Never have I seen something like this and was pretty sad. He was one of the original tiger barbs I had in my tank (and one of the Alphas) for over a year and a half. :(

Sorry to hear it!
Is it possible it knocked itself out?

Thats what I'm thinking. It's mouth was locked open when it came back down. Should have tried CPR with a straw or something...

LOL Cpr is interesting!
If it ever happens again maybe hold it in front of the filter to allow water to pass through it gills.
I don't know if it will work but its worth a try.Only if you see it happen other than that I would consider it dead.
It makes you wonder just how many fish are found dead from an accident like this and how many people dose their tanks with meds as a precaution.

Yeah, unfortunately, he definitely was dead. I guess fish can have accidental deaths as well.

Makes me wonder about the disappearance of my female Krib. Not sure how she died but the rest of the fish must have covered up the evidence by eating the remains. Seems like my tank is full of mysteries unfortunately...

All aquariums are full of mystery!
Thats why we have to test the water,do our water changes, watch for any signs of distres or change,Add treatments to the water,.......... lol
Some people do everything they are suppose to when they are suppose to do it and still have tragic failures. Its always seems to be something you cannot see!
Heck! Look at Red Severums troubles right now,and I would trust him to watch my tanks anytime.Anything can go wrong and will if you are not careful.

I had that happen to a Betta one time. He jumped and banged his head hard on the hood. He had a huge knot on his head and he died a day later. :scry:

Sorry for the loss, these things do happen.

Agreed, aquariums are a good place to look for a good mystery

Sorry for your loss. Yep, aquariums continue to have mysteries in them, even for experienced fishkeepers.

Sucks ya just stand there and watch them die! I'm down to only 3 tiger barbs, and they are looking a little stressed so I think I'm going to buy 3 more. There are two albinos and 3 green tigers (very small) already in there as well. Still need to find my male Krib a female partner :(

Full of mysteries/drama for sure, but still a rewarding hobby!

I have to agree on that! I've had multiple "simple" problems show up in my long established tanks with perfect parameters. Its not so much a problem that they show up, but no matter what I do or what people suggest I do, it never seems to help!!! *grumbles to herself*

Really sorry to hear about your fish. Its the worst when its a senior member that gets lost.

RIP poor little fishy
