View Full Version : Pool filter sand?

My 46 bow front has pool filter sand in it. The sand is "sandy" to the touch. I'm setting up the new 46 to have sand and used half a bag left over and purchased a new one. The new sand isn't the same. It is way finer. It feels more like mud than sand. It produced a really thick foam and I have been rinsing forever and it still looks like the Mississippi river. Should I continue cleaning this or go back to home depot and get some play sand? Is this stuff what its supposed to look like?

I would just give it some time to settle before you make any conclusions. But if push comes to shove, I would go ahead and get some play sand.

Is it fine that its so "fine"? It really looks more like sediment.

I understand what you are saying. Hmm...I'm not sure how fine it's supposed to be, but I can easily guess that it is supposed to be.

Maybe they just bagged it wrong. I think I will use it, I just have to rinse forever more. The only thing that bothers me is that it looks more brown than white, but thats just looks.

I was checking out some info on the interweb and the most I could find was that the really fine stuff could float and clog the impeller. This stuff is pretty heavy. Aside from floating out of the bucket by high pressure water (I'm covered in it from blasting it too hard) it sinks like a rock. We shall see.

Any other comments?

Ask Wild Turkey about it!His corys were kicking up clouds with it.It didn't take him long to remove it!
I used #16 silica pool filter sand. It falls and acts just like gravel, only looks like white sand.

okay so i rinsed really well and put it in the tank. while the water was filling it was cloudy but has already settled. i'm letting the tank get to the right temperature. i need to get a new heater though. tomorrow i'm going to move the filter and the fish and get photos.
