View Full Version : 10g x 2 Dwarf Gouramis - Revisited

I have been reading all the posts in this section and most of my questions have been either answered or replaced with new questions. The original 10g 2 dwarf thread results seemed to indicate that 2 dwarfs were too much for a 10g tank - but, is this because of the many other potentially larger fish that were already in there? Or are a pair of two inch gouramis too much for such a tank with consideration of their personality traits and physical needs?
I am preparing a second ten gallon tank and a stocking plan. Once my tank is cycled, I would like to introduce two male Dwarf Gouramis, and possibly two or three Pearl or Gold Danios and an Applesnail.

I have 2 dwarf gouramis in a 10g. I have no problems. I would suggest getting a male and female, 10g is too small for 2 males.

I finally did it. I picked up two flame Dwarf Gouramis, one male and one female, for the tank I finished cycling last week (yes I kept dosing with ammonia until I was ready to add fish). I also picked up three Danios. I wanted Pearl Danios, but the Pearls at the LFS looked suspiciously like the Gold Danios in the next tank but with a higher price tag. I opted instead for a mixed bag out of the Zebra Danio tank - two Leopard Danios and one regular Zebra Danio. One of the Leopards seem much smaller and golder than the other, but it may just be younger, it seems healthy otherwise.
Just to be safe I have added a capful of Stresscoat and a standard dose of Aquarisol to the tank while waiting for the fish to acclimate.
Twenty minutes later...my Danios are swimming around like they own the tank and my two Gouramis are hiding in the bushes. The LFS rep was worried that the Gouramis might eat my Danios, time will tell but so far that does not seem like it will be a problem. I am giving them a little time to get used to their new surroundings and then I will give them some food and leave them alone for the rest of the weekend - this is my work tank, near my desk.

Yea for Flame Dwarf Gouramis. I'm really impressed that you were able to find a female. We currently have a single male (there were two others, but we had a fungus/medication take a good number of our fish a few weeks ago). My wife has been on the hunt for a female since we came home about a week ago and found that our male had built a bubble nest (don't ask us who he was planning on mating with...)

I don't think you have anything to worry about with the Danios. We had several Danios in our tank (again before the fungus/medication) and the Gouramis never went near them....in fact the only hostility that we ever saw was just between the Gouramis.
Enjoy yoru new fish:)

I doubt the gourami's could even catch a danio. I would have opted for 2 males, however. The only time they display aggression is when there's a female and that may cause snapping at other species.

Male gouramis are similar to bettas in temperament, though they aren't as aggressive. 2 males in a 10g will still kill each other though. In larger tanks, it's not as bad because they can each have their own space.

I have not seen to many female Gouramis or female Bettas, but they do pop up from time to time. I got lucky at the petstore nearest where I live as they just got a whole tank full of an even mix of male and female Flame and Flame Sunset Dwarf Gouramis. They are starting to get used to their new tank and showing themselves. The colours on the male is spectacular. Even the female is relatively beautiful even if she doesn't have the spectacular colour patterning of the male. The Danios have eaten the first meal with the Gouramis still uncertain. My Betta (at my home tank) took a few days before he would eat anything and now he is insatiable.
I am hoping that I will have better luck with this tank as I cycled without any fish. I have not lost any more of my original Danios from my home tank, but I would have preferred not to lose any, other than to old age.

My new Danios are pigs. They get to the feeding ring first every time and make a huge mess going after every scrap of food in there. It seems that they will continue to eat as much and as often as I put food in there, and then clean up the bottom of any leftovers.
My new Gouramis are starting to relax in their new home as well and do seem to be getting some food, but mostly they are just looking at the Danios. The Gouramis are not getting nearly as much food as the Danios due to their being slower to the trough. But I keep putting more in (within reason) to ensure that they are getting something.
No fights, no funny behaviour (amusing yes but not sickly). The male Flame Dwarf seems to like his female tank mate, but no squabbles.

I had two Dwarf Flames in a 10 gallon also - they got along perfectly for a while (about two months). Then they woke up one day and decided to kill each other. I was able to move one to another tank as soon as I saw it happening but they had beaten each other up so badly that they were both dead within a few days.
They are beautiful fish (I have 1 gourami in each of my larger tanks) but I wouldn't put two together in a heavily planted swimming pool.
