So after a long period of time with no fish in my small tanks, I decided to go ahead and throw a few guppies in one of them. I've got 5 at the moment.....2 Male and 3 Female. I do know they reproduce like crazy and I am okay with that. I have a 20 gallon, which at the moment is sparsly stocked....I'm talking 2 neon tetras, 4 green fire tetras and 5 cory cats. So I figured I would be able to compensate for the guppy babies which I'm sure I'll have.

On the current situation and question at hand.....I was cleaning the water and noticed I was sucking up a baby and hurried up let it loose back in the tank. I scowered the whole area looking with a flashlight to see if there were any more. So far its the only one I've seen but I do not have room for anymore in the small tank. But I feel bad only sticking one in the bigger tank. (Assuming this little guy doesn't get eaten by the others). Do you recommend putting the lone ranger in the big tank with the other neons? I know they like to be in groups of 5 or more, but do you think he'd be okay with just the tetras until there are more babies put in, down the road?

i think as long as he has somewhere to hide, like in plants or caves, he might make it. he's done alright for himself so far.

I never really don't think they care if they are a group or not except for when they're small fry. Since there are no other fry, in this situation IMO the guppy fry would be better off in the 20g.

Actually since you are looking forward to more guppy babies, this might be the right time to get a breeder net. I have one thats basically a net that fits over a plastic frame and ties snug at the top, leaving the top open. I think its superior to the plastic ones since the net allows water flow without any large gaps the fry could slip thru. Set it up in your 20 and your good to go thumbs2:

Moving the fry across at that age is probably fine. Given than you could only find one though one of the other fish may have eaten a few of them as guppies usually drop 5-10 fry at a time I believe.

A breeder net is a great idea. One of the other things that I use here is a juice bottle with very small holes drilled into the top half (with the smallest bit I had). It gives the females a LOT of room to swim around and when the time comes you can pick the bottle up and move the fry to the other tank without a problem.

I agree with the breeder net idea. Especially if you want to keep the little guy. No matter what tank you put him in, the chances of him becoming a snack for one of the other fish is pretty good.

I agree, breeder net or at best a new tank, but thats always my solution:hmm3grin2orange: But if you are planning on seeing more offspring, setting up an old tank/buying a new one might not be such a bad idea.

Hey Nic, that's a great idear. How about a pic or two if it's not too much trouble?
