What is a good size for a hospital tank? My LFS said a 5 gallon with a filter (mini bow tank kit) would work okay, but I am not sure yet if this is a LFS I can count on. I have a 20g not set up, but it seems too big to use just for a hospital tank. I what to be prepared in the event that one of my fish should need one, or if any of my fry should survive.

I suppose the best question would be, how big are your fish?

Oh, that!
20gallon
1 cory cat
2 black mollies
3 platys
6 tetra
(25-30 molly fry in a breeder tank...born Monday)

...and none are full size yet except the tetra

Then a five gallon would be alright. I think you should go with a 10 though. That way you know they have ample room and wont get stressed out from such a small tank

My 10 is a hospital tank. It's always nice to have one just a tad larger incase you having a breeding pair and need to separate them, as well.

Yes, you never know what you might run into down the road. Maybe even fry...
