Excellent thread!

I've tried orchids a few times but could never get them to stick. Once we get into a house I'm going to try them again.

I've actually done some cultivation with tropical hibiscus in the house,

I also grow my own amaryllis. These are 4 year old plants that i started from seed.

Here is a christmas cactus I grew from seed as well. It's a pure white/purple cross. Nice pink flower.

Yeah the Hibiscus were my favorites for a really long time. I had some luck cross breeding them in the house as well although I never got any flowers on the young plants.

Unfortunately when I changed apartments after I got married I no longer had an area that was as sunny as the breakfast nook where they were in my old apartment. As a result I lost almost all of them. I still have 2 left (the red and what I think is the yellow/orange one (left) although it hasn't flowered in a long time so I'm not sure really.

Hibiscus was one of my favoured plants when I kept them.

This is what I woke up to this morning.

That's the underside of one of my croton's new leaves.

Not quite as interesting from the top unfortunately... But it's come a long way from the scraggly green wilted clump of leaves it was when I got it...

Unfortunately the windows are pretty shaded by some trees and the building across the courtyard from us... But at least we get some light through it...

That is beautiful! Have you tried a lamp?

Yup, I've got a lamp over the croton. I'm actually working on setting up a corner in our living room with some light fixtures and building shelves to fill the wall space with plants. I just haven't been able to figure out how many watts I'd be looking for.

The windows are actually perfect for hanging baskets with pothos, and they already have the hooks in place, so I should have some new green and leafy curtains next chance I get to go to the garden center.

We had at one point every colour variation of the african violet, although we only have 7 plants now, most of them regular purple, although not all are blooming right now so...

We also have those flowers that look like they're looking at you.

My grandmother had several African violets, but I can't get a single one to grow. I'd love to try again & figure out what I've done wrong. The houseplants I have right now are Palm & Good Luck Bamboo.

I've got no clue, my father could just clip off leaves of the plants and the things would grow like weeds.

Lol. I've been trying to grow one from a cutting. It's taken it like 3 months just for the roots to start growing.

The African Violets have been thriving in this house better than most of the other plants.

When you water them don't give them too much. Just enough that the soil is wet, but not enough that it gets soggy. When we water we only get a few drips draining out the bottom. We don't even really need the drip pan, it's only there in case we water a bit too much.

Other than that, they haven't been too demanding and seem to have grown well over the years.

Oooooooooooh!
Here's a fun fact:

If you water your plants with the water from your aquarium (after water exchanges) your plants should grow a little better.

It's because of all the nitrates when you take it out, nutrients for plants, both on land and in water!

Water the African Violets from the bottom only, they hate it when their leaves get wet, also give them food each time you water them. Just put the food in a small shallow dish with the water and set the plant in it. If you do not have a window that gives them enough light, put them under a normal old table lamp. Also, AV like tight shoes, so do not place them in a large pot.
