I bought a 2nd smaller tank to use for breeding from someone for a bargin. Caveat was it came with the fish which have surprisingly survived what looks like years without much cleaning. After I got the tank home I gave the tank a complete clean and changed the substrate & decorations.
I don't want to just toss the fish, so I'm trying to nurse them back to health. They have some sort of brown/green film covering their top halves. It almost looks like algae is growing on the fish, but it could also be velvet from what I've read.
Tank parameters:
20 gallon, 6.8 PH, 0 ammonia, 0 NO2, 1 ppm NO3, 80 GH, 90 KH
Stock:
2 Anglefish, 2 Cory (I think, I can't tell what genus with the discoloration)

Forgot to add. The fish are acting normal, they're eating just fine and not rubbing up on things.
The tank had been established for aprox 2 years before I cleaned it & replaced substrate/decor.

I can't see anything unusual on that fish. If it's acting fine I wouldn't worry, just keep an eye on it.

It's the brown stuff on their top and along the top fin. These arn't Koi, it should be silver & black marble.

Would you mind elaborating? I wasn't aware that anglefish change colors when they spawn. Does this occur in males, females, or both?
Thanks.

A little google searching and I saw some photo's of breeding anglefish. Sure enough, look just like mine. I didn't find any info about the why on the discoloration though.

Its almost always to attract the opposite sex, that would be my guess in this case and pretty much any case of color change at or around the time of spawning. Hey baby...*eyebrows*:hmm3grin2orange:

Does it go away if they don't spawn? I can't tell the sex, but I think they are both the same gender. I'm relieved all the same, thanks for the responses.

I'm almost sure the coloration stays, because once he's sexually mature, he will want a mate almost all the time.
