We're very sad our little Bristlenose Pleco's just been found dead, lost his colour, looked abit picked at - we have guppies in there, our first thought was they've done it? Yesterday did a water test, Ammonia 0.50, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 5.0. Sorry to say we didn't notice him then, but son says he saw him day before alive. 10G planted tank. Could it have been the high ammonia?

It could have been the Ammonia. If the tank is new, and there was no algae, he may have starved if you weren't feeding specifically for him. The guppies are innocent!

Aw, sorry to hear. The ammonia, and nitrite is way to high for a bottom feeder (I found this out the bad way too and lost a catfish). If you want another pleco, wait until ammonia and nitrites are low (0) and you should be good to go. Also, if you don't have any wood in the tank, get some before you get another pleco (if you decide to).

Ammonia and nitrIte definitely. The 10 gallon unfortunately was probably not going to work for him long term anyway.

Thanks everyone, we were feeding for him and a clown loach, which we've moved to a bigger tank, so it could have been food as between the loach & guppies - I don't think he got much, we had wood for him too, but wont replace him - we'll keep the other plecos where they are!

Sorry you lost your fish!:11:
Plecos need a stable tank. The algae needs to build up before you add them.Bristle nose love to eat algae.
