Curiosity speaking, I was just noticing that around my Amazon Sword many roots have been poking through the sand like little tendrels and I was wondering: Is this normal?

There are a lot of them.

They look pretty cool and they occupy the open space behind my decorations and in front of the sword and the Cories seem to enjoy it so they aren't bad but they're kind of weird.

At a guess I would say the swords were not planted properly, by this I mean, when you put the swords in to the tank you should have choped off about 1/3 of the root system. I have never seen roots protruding. What you could get is runners coming off the main plant, as the runners grow you will got lots of mini swords developing. I am constantly taking plants back to Shop as I have no more room in the tank. In a short answer to your question, I would not be concerned about the exposed roots unless something is digging them up:18:

Cool, BTW the reason I was so weirded out was because the roots were so small an there were not very many of them and then a few weeks later I looked at my tank the right way and Poof - they're here!

This happens with most any sword plant, trimmed roots or not.As they mature the roots naturally go out in all directions including up.The bottom of my tank looks like it has a coat of white hairs.
