The weather is starting to get warmer which means it's time to start working on the gardens/plants outside. Up here in the northeast there is still some concern about frost at night so I haven't put in my vegtible garden just yet but I have put out a bunch of potted plants on my front deck.

Sigh, the only garden here i take credit for here is indoors. All the other "gardens" grow whatever they feel like of the plants that have been planted there in the last 30 years:hmm3grin2orange: But i can get out there and get some pics/names if the darn clouds will go away!

Really nice shots gb

It was nice here yesterday, and my boss was not at work, so I took the day off and put in our summer vegetable garden.

I wanted to try a time lapse movie but the tripod kept blowing over in the wind and it didn't come out very good.

1. The starting area (we used the same place last year)
2. After I manually weeded and rotated all the soil
3. After I put the fence up (which took FOREVER) and made the beds. Unfortunately I forgot to add the topsoil in (see bags in front)! So I had to do it manually to each bed afterward.
4. Finished garden
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k188/drnic2032/AC%20Photos/garden2009.jpg

All told I started at about noon, and finished up at about 7PM with trips to 2 garden shops to get the plants we wanted (I already had most of the seeds). It came out pretty well but man are my legs killing me today.

Last year we did a LOT of tomatoes and failed with the corn (due to the local squirrels). This year we mixed it up quite a bit. We've got tomatoes, peppers, celery, LOTs of lettuce, scallions, basil and other herbs, cucumber and beans all along the fence (some of them are seeds so you can't see them yet). I also put in some watermelon seeds although I'm not sure where I will put the vines if the plants take.

I'll toss up more photos thought the year as the plants get larger.

What kind of maters you growing?

It's a mix, although not anything really special. We've got Early Girls, Romas (for sauce), Beefsteaks, Brandywines, Yellow Brandywines, Golden Boys (which I really like), and cherries. We were trying to find more of the heirloom tomatoes, which we had last year, but the garden shops in the area didn't have any.

Last year we had half that plot with just heirlooms that were SO GOOD!! I really wish they had some this year. If I find some later in the season I might try to squeeze them in.

I had ordered some seeds over the winter that were tomatoes of the world. The plants did well in the house up until about a month ago at which point they all died so we couldn't use them in the yard. I was pretty bummed.

Yeah the heirlooms are wonderful!!!! My parents have a bunch of them, they drove for like 2 hours to get to this nursery that had some. I dont have any this year :( It just seems every time I grow them they turn yellow and die. But my mom started a bunch from seed and they have bought several plants so I am going to raid theirs!!! IDK My dad said he got one that is purple? I am interested to see that. I love fried green tomatoes!
They have also gone a little nuts with the peppers this year, I think they have like 20 plants.

Yeah we had 3 varieties of purple last year and two that were BRIGHT orange. From what the nurseries told us there was a disease that popped up this year that reduced the amount of heirlooms sold in the northeast. The ones that did survive are really expensive and most nurseries aren't carrying them.

Just wanted to toss up a new photo of the garden.

Here it is when I started
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k188/drnic2032/AC%20Photos/garden2009.jpg

Here it is last week.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k188/drnic2032/AC%20Photos/gardenjune.jpg
It's been REALLY cool and cloudy here in June so the tomatoes aren't quite where I want them to be. (I think that we only had 4 days of sun ALL June) The tall stuff in the middle left is actually lettuce which is going CRAZY!! It's like 3 feet tall!
