View Full Version : Common pleco feeding

Hey everyone, I have a few questions. :ssmile:

My common pleco is about 6.5 inches in my 75 gl. It has been flourishing in there with sinking shrimp pellets every once in a blue moon. About what size do they stop grazing algae? And when do they need a regular diet such a cucumbers and other sinking pellets? I was told not to feed them often when they're young because they get spoiled and won't clean your tank.

Also, since the oscar is in there...who loves to destruct -.- , is using the fork as an aid to sink the vegetable into the tank a good idea?

Thank you! :)

Oh wow! well that's cool haha. I just dont have any other fish besides the oscar. I heard they stop eating algae when they get to a certain size and need veggies along with pellets, but I'm not sure about that :P

They really are somewhat of an omnivore with leanings toward vegetarianism.Feed them zucchini or squash or cucumber he will like it,but he don't have to have it.Algae pellets are a good source for them as well.

Ok thanks:22: Would you happen to know know if it's true that they stop eating algae in the tank at some point?

It is very true. Mine is already at 5 inches and now refuses to eat algae. You are lucky at this point if he's still eating your algae. I'm pretty sure they can stop eating algae anywhere from the four inch mark to the eight inch mark.

I have not heard that. Mine eats just about anything and everything....... His favorites are Zuchinni and blood worms. But he still cleans his home up too, algae speaking. I am not for sure how old he is but he is atleast 3 years old.

I've heard they only stop eating algae because they get a better liking to other foods, like leftover fish food, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, so they don't feel the need to eat the algae. But maybe it's just personal preference, like some people like brussel sprouts and others don't.
